In the Legislature yesterday afternoon the Provincial Secretary (Hon. Mr. Mitch. ell) made his annual budget apeech, ad- mitting a large deficit which he hoped to considerably wipe out, he said, by an in- crease in the subsidy received from the Dominion Government after the next census. The Opposition made a fierce attack on the Government’s recklessness, which brought about deficit, and declared that direct taxation was only a question of time if such extravagance ccatinued. OTTAWA NOTES. —_—_— + Postmaster-Reneral’s Report. ee ee Orrawa, March 19. The Postmaster-GCeneral’s report for 1890 has just been issued. It shows an increase in the expenditure of 5 per cent., and in the revenue of 8 per cent. Thirty-one post the year, making a total of 494. The-saving effected by the Government on account of the decrease in the rate of interest amounts | to, $80,000.
