By acclamation. Also, you can’t vote for Vice-President Comptroller Freshman Science Sophomore Business Junior Science Senior Science Education. Nobody is running. ' Think of it this way: this university is Just ripe for being taken over by a radical student movement. In this election, any party which nominated a full slate of candidates would be guaranteed at least seven seats, with a chance to contest the other eleven —— Just by getting five signature for each can- didate. Hell, I scared up five signatures for Winnie-the-Pooh (shades of the Bear Party) the other day. He would have run, except that he’s a non-student. This is quite a year for “non-students”. The sooner a committed opinion of any kind makes itself felt around here the better, as far as I’m concerned. At least things might get stirred up a little. As Eldridge Cleaver said: “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the prob- lem. ’ Think about it. —Hornby ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER One doesn’t want to appear hyper-criti- cal, and overwhelm the new council executive members with the awesomeness of the tasks which will confront them, but it seems to me that keeping office hours will be a sine qua non of the jobs. You who are elected Will have to post something more substantial than the sign on the office of interim treasurer White- It read: LET TE RS T 0; TO 98% OF THE STUDENTS by a concerned member of the university ‘ community Who’s had enough You are stupid, lazy, apathetic, loudmouths who claim you have the ability to take part in the planning of educational goals, curriculum, etc. You “demand” more responsibility, more represen- tation. You criticize the system and lash out with tongues like arrows, but where in the hell are your bows? Once and for all I am sick of your criticisms, I am sick of your accusations —— your calls for more freedom. Just stand back and look at yourselves. You spend as little time as possible doing academic work, you hate it, you come to classes and labs unprepared and then bore your way through, learning nothing. You spend hundreds of hours sitting in boring clas- ses and labs allowing yourself to get NOTHING out of them. You claim we are boring, incompetent, and allow little academic freedom. Quoting your Student Union president “the curriculum often seems sterile and irrelevant, fails to motivate him (that’s you), or even repels him”. Who are you trying to kid? You lazy punks force us into this situation. We “have to” spoon feed you, tell you what courses to take, how much to read, when to read it, and even what it means. We have to “trick you” into learning. You damn well wouldn’t do it on your own. REMEMBER WHAT??? By Stephen Foster Another Remembrance Day is coming up and I can’t help feeling this is one of the most hypocritical events in our calendar year. After all, what’s it all about? Every year, on, Novem- ber 11th, people stop whatever they’re doing to pay homage to the men Who died trying to pre- ’ serve world peace. ~ I don’t intend to belittle any of the men Who died during the world wars. I’m sure some of them, at least, honestly believed they were fighting, and dying, for global peace. Indeed, after each of the last world wars it was declared that there would be no more wars —— the world had learned its lesson. Yet it was only twenty- one years after World War I and we were again engaged in a world struggle for supremacy. That was twenty-four years ago, and for the last ten years we have existed under the continual threat of the Third World War —— this time it could quite literally be the war to end all wars; all humanity for that matter. I see no point in celebrating war. Why mock _‘___________________.___———————————-—-———— “Office hours: Hours will be when I am here. You are supposed to be in college because you want to learn, gain more knowledge, etc., through our guidance and your“\ perserverance, and yearn to learn. _ What a farce! I’m sick of irresponsible accus- atlons from you, the “hallowed” student, the “pro— fessional crammer”. Don’t you think it’s about time you got off my back? ATTACK TRIBAL GATHERING . I realize there is a bureaucracy at this univer- sity, one which is perhaps necessary. But how long do the students at the Residences have to wait be- fore they get a decision concerning open residences. I would like to make a recommendation to all mem- bers of residences -— OPEN THE RESIDENCES YOURSELVEIS. Why wait for the Board of Gov- ernors to make a decision? You are the people liv- ing in the residences. I agree with President Baker that residences are subsidized and that the decision should be made by all members of the university community, but I fail to see how the Board of Gov- ernor-s is representative, in the true sense of the word, of the university community. I" take it upon myself to speak for the students at U.P.E.I., who make up the majority in this community when I say “go ahead, openup your residences. You have nothing to lose but your chains.” ‘ —MacKay men who died thinking they were fighting {for peace? Man has shown, time after time, that it is impossible to achieve peace through violence. Yet we never seem to learn the lesson. We con- tinually kill in the name of peace, and freedom. I’m sure the people of Vietnam appreciate our noble sentiments — but I can’t help wondering if they appreciate their lives more. Until we achieve a lasting world peace, through cooperation and understanding, we have nothing to remember and praise except failures —— and Remembrance Day is only an exercise in delusion. Those men didn’t die for a last- ing peace, they died to give man enough time to develop a more sophisticated arsenal with which to destroy himself. We have forsaken them. Or do we think we don’t needxto fear another world war 7- is it really as Bob Dylan wrote: If God is on our side He’ll stop the next war. People who believe that should bear in mind one little thing — He was supposed to be on Our side long before now. , . ________.__——————-———-———-—-——————“-—, ,
