How to Make 40 - Year - Old Husband Vamp-Proof. Shall Hus- bands Change Names on Marriage ? Dear Miss Dix-Is a man's frist duty to his wife and children or sncilirl he put his father and mother before them? I know a young wrinian is thinking of leaving her husband because of his super-devotio \Vhat should she do about it? A FRIEND, _i< Answer: Such a man has a mother and father flxatio but what his wife needs is not a. divorce lawye string. ii.. Of course. every x-ight-thinking woman wants her husband to go on loving his parents and doing his duty by them. She not only admires his family loyalty, but feels that it ia a bulwark of protection to her also, for the mall who is filled with a sense of obl ation to fath an 18 his er d mother and sisters and brothers is Nao faithful to his own family. He is never a wife-deserter or an irresponsible father who throws his child- ren out on the world to shift for themselves. He stands by his own to the last ditch. f --im But, on the other hand, there is probably no other one thing that n husband can do that is so irritating to his wife as to be one of the Mamma. babies that never get weaned and who has to always be trotting brick to his parents to be told what she should do and what he shouldn't do and who still feels that ths house in which they live is home instead of thc place where his wife and children abide. _m When a woman marries a man she wants him to be a grown-up adult and to act like one. She wants him to stand on his own feet and be the head of his own house instead of a child in his fathers. And if bla he has to talk things over with anybody she feels that she is the one who should be his conildante and adviser. not his parents. ‘ When a man puts his parents before his wife it invariably makes trouble, for the wife would be more than human if she was not Jealous of those whom he loves better than he does her, who have more influence over him than she has and whose interests he puts before hers, 1 This is why the old adage that "a good son makes a good husband" is il misleading tip for a. girl in picking out her mate. For some of tllc model sons are so completely married to their parents that they have no piace in their lives or their hearts for t‘heir wives. It is always Mother who is the standard of female perfection in their eyes and whose cooking and economy and taste and way of doing things they throw up to their wives. And it is really Mother who rules their houses and their lives. Also, these men with the family nxations do not hesitate to sacrifice their wives and children to their fathers and mothers and brothers and sisters. I have known more than one instance in which a wife was de~ nied every comfort so that her husband could support his parents in lux- ury. und I have known dozens oi’ other cases in which a man kept his own wife and children poor and shabby by giving all the money he made to his brothers and sisters, v/ho rode in fine cars while his own family walked. I don't wonder that a woman married to a man who puts his father and mother before her feels like leaving him, but divorce isn't the answer to the problem of what she should do. It is jumping out of the frying pan into the fire, because if she has no husband at all she will be worse of! than if she has a piece of a husband. Also, there are the children to consider. How is she to support mem? How is she to educate them? Will _they be better off with no father than with one who is setting them such an example of nllal devo- tion? How are they to get a start in life with no father to help them? Better to put up with a lot of aggravation than to wreck your children‘s future. - The only wise thing that a woman really can do in the situation is just to get a. grip on herself and try to realize that things might be .worse Her rival might be a ilapper instead of an old man and woman. DOROTHY DIX. l O O O O I Dear Dorothy Dix-We have been married fifteen years and were un- usually happy until a year ago when we met a woman who has vamped my husband. He is about 40 and apparently at the age when they fall ;,r such women. Now my question is this: Should I invite her e lot to my house and give them the opportunity of seeing each other often on the chance that he will tire of her that way or shall I discontinue being friends with her and try to keep him from seeing her? TRUE WIFE. ___ Answer: No wife can keep her husband from seeing another woman if he, Dante to see her and the more difficulties she throws in the way, the i more determined he is not to be thwarted and the more romantic and I adventurous the affair becomes to him. i The thing that makes the "other woman" glamorous to the married man is the unknown. He sees her only at brief intervals and by stealth. I-le meets her in back-street restaurants and locks fearfully around to src if there is any one there who knows him. He has only a few words of conversation with her and doesn't have to listen to her long enough to find that she is tiring. So the affair takes on the rosy hues of romance and he gets a kick out of just as he did when he was playing pirate when he was 7 years old. And if the wife makes rows and ructions about it so that the mall has to scheme more and more to see the "other woman." he becomes more and more enamoured of her and plunges deeper and deeper inm the affair. ' So I think the wife’s play in such an aifair is not to try to separate her husband from the vamp, but to give him an overdose of her. Let him have so much of her society that he will get bored with her. Let the novelty cf her rub of! as soon as possible. After a man has lived happily with a woman for fifteen years she has become a habit with him. She has become an integral part of his life. and ll he has loved her that long, the real love of his heart will always bc for her and every other feeling he has for a woman is a passing fancy. So thc thing to do is to get thc passing fancy out of his system as ,con as possible. And the wife can do this best by ml-king her a com- ncziplace, everyday acquaintance, who is no better looking when her ~:»ukt--lip is off than hh wife is without hen, who is a bore when you have . i to his parents. Even during the honcynloon he always wanted to include father and mother in all of their excursions, and he has told his wife that his one ambition is to make good so as to be able to take care oi his parents when they are old. but a psychiatrist who will cure him of his little- boy desire to be always tied to Mummlfs apron ,--_-.-2 ll l'l rn --` _ _ _ig . ` -. __ _ | i~ .
