Dr. Syd _ i _ _ , ._ i 11 ` 5°’ The Examiner, with a. laudable desire to furt_her the election of the Opposition candidate in the pending by-election, says: “The Farmer candidate ought to receive the farmers’ votes,--not the Doctor Candi- date." Now Tin: Guaizniais has no disposition to intervene between the parties who are contesting the Second District of Quecn’s, preferring to leave the decision to the calm judgment of the electors who know both the candidates better probably than we know them, and who also have, we trust, an intelligent idea of the policies and principles they represent. But we may venture to examine the principle laid down in the sentence above quoted from the Examiner and try to sift the chaff _from the wheat. Its underlying principle is that a body of electors ought to be represented by a man of the same calling in life as themselves. It is we think regrettable that a larger umber of the farm ers of Canada have not endeavoured to quality themselves for representative positions. The farmers, who compose somewhere about two thirds of the Canadian electorate, possess as much native intelligence as any other class. They are owners of the greater por- tion of our soil; they have a. permanent possession and a stake inthe country with whose welfare their interests are insepar- ably bound up. They are, in fact among the truest and best representatives of the manhood and patriotism of the coun- try. But comparatively few of their num- ‘ ber have given the time and the study to public affairs, or have taken such part in the discussion of their country’s concerns as to fully qualify them for seats in par- liament. This, we think, is to be regret- ted. The farmer-electors are themselves conscious of the facts above stated and hence in a large proportion of cases they select a professional man, a merchant or a manufacturer to speak for them, voice their views and guard their interests in parliament. There is this also to be said. A large proportion of the lawyers, doctors, and _merchants of the Province are farmers' can imagine many an honest farmer, whose son is a lawyer ora doctor, resent- ing The Examiners dictum with some warmth, because, the principle therein laid down would shutout bis son from be- `iug arepresentative of the people. The principle is not sound. It would have shut out the printer, Joseph Howe, from representing the farmers of Hants Coun- ty. It would have excluded “Dr. Tupper' from being the representative of the farm- ers of Cumberland. It would have pre- vented Editor Sir Mackenzie Bowell from being the champion for so many years of the farmers of North Hastings. Who would think it desirable to exclude Sir M0ntague,Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Sir Adolphe Caron, or Hon. Hugh John M¢1)0m,,]d from their present representative posi- tions because they are not farmers? \Vould it have been to the advantage of the country to have excluded Sir John Macdonald from public life because he was a lawyer, or Alexander Mackenzie from representing the farmersof Lambton because he was a stone mason? _ We think the electors of the Sccondfis trict ought neither to accept nor rcjecl either of the candidates before them on the grounds that one _is a farmer and the other a doctor. The electors ought rather to look to the capability and characters of he two men and the soundness of the EV' principles and policies they respectively represent. It is fitting that the elector should inquire whether a. candidate is fairly educated, has aknowledge of tle country‘s affairs and ability to discuss them; whether the candidate is honest, truthful, reliable and patriotic. These are matters of vastly more ccnsequence than the calling in life which one or the other follows and by which he earns his bread. The best and foremost public men of this Province and of the Dominion have been chosen in the past from all the var- ious callings by which men earntheir liv- ing,_and it must needslie so inthe future. ; . .- _t ._ V #fp- ___ < .\ .. z L < 0;? 4,, L". 4 / TY 5 ' '- of l5c>boo&einthc'eity.f ' ff . -* The freshest and beet assert- 1" .' ment of confectionery.
