When they were asked why they did net remove the gold chain and medalion areund his neck after death they replied: ‘Because he was brave. Reports from Kansas City says the Santa Fe trains are delayed by @ snew storm For nearly thirty-six heurs it has been snowiag hard in Western Kanaas, Colorado and New Mexico. From Larkin west to Pueble there ave from six to eight inches.of- enow, while from Lajunta west there are from eighteen to twenty inches. The cuts are full and a strong wind is drifting it badly. This is the heaviest snow storia in New Mexics and Colorado that the Santa Fe Railroad ever encountered. A tale of almost unequalled self-sacrifios comes from the Transraal. Dr, Landon, of the Army Medical Departinent, was wound- ed at the Majuba Mountain on the day when Sir George Colley wes killed. The bullet struck his spine, and paralyzed his lower _—_ limbs. Knowing he must die he called to the orderliea tear him and caused himself to be propped up against a boulder. There, im the very presence of death, he with his own hand ferced the morphia solution into the wounded arm of Corporal Farmer, and thus frightfully wounded and suffering most acutely, he died. A man had a curious race for life nea Meriden, Conn. He swallowed a larg dose of morphine, intending suicide, bu quickly changed his mind, and started for the nearest physiciams, who was twe miles away. Hefelt the dangerous drowsiness stealing over him, and ran with all his might. The exercise kept him awake, but his mouth became parched, his eyes filmy, and his strength less. He stopped to pray, but an instant of delay warned him that, unless he depended on miraculous help, there was no time to be lost on his knees He at length stumbled into the doctor’s office, and fell senseless on the floer, but was saved by energetic treatment. The London Echo has the following paragraph : — Meetings of discontented Scotch farmers continue to be held almost daily. The movement is evidently strong est im Aberdeenshire, The report of the committee who were deputed te apply te che landlords fer a reductien of rent has been presented. Only eleven out of tweaty-three proprietors condescended to give any reply, aud these intimated that they preferred to deal with their tenants individually. Ata meeting of five hundred farmers at which the report was presented, it was resolved to press for ths introduction of a Land Bill next session. One of thi speakers, amid the applause of the audience declared that the factors, or landlerds agents, were abominated both in the con. erete and inthe abstract, as the greatest curse that Aberdeenshire farmers had ever been afflicted with. It is worthy of note that while the deposits in the banks of the United States are increas ing at a rapid rate, these of Great Gritain are nearly statienary, and staad at a lower poin than they did three years ago. A earefully compiled table in the London Economist gives the gross deposits in all the banks o! the United Kingdom at from £550,000,080 t £560,000,000 ia the autemn of 1°78. Th. flu -tuations since have been between 500 ané 530 millions sterling, and the estimate for th autumn of 1881 is at £520,000,000 to £530.- 000,600 Comparing the growth of deposits in United States banks with these figures we find that in October, 1874, they ameunted t $669,009,000, and declined steadily in the Uctober statement un‘il 1877, when they were only 616 mulions. Since then they have been growing rapidly. They were 622 mii jiens 1a IS7$; 719 miilions in, 1879 ; 873 mi! lions in 1880; and this year tiley are reporte: st 1071 millions. Port- land is the home of Neil Dow ; the place where, according to the most vehement if not the most couvincing testimony, the prohibitory law is a success, aud where people no longer drink or are drunken. That more than a_ third of the hus- bands of Portland whose wives want to be rid ot them should be able to get enough liquor to become habitual drunkards, shows that there is “a leak somewhere.” Another curious fact is that crime is increasiug in Maiue. The Rev. Washington Gluddes, of Spiingfield, Mass., ia a review of Goy- eruor Diugley's statistics of crime, calls attention to the discrepancy between his opision that drunkenness is decreasing and his figures, which show that other crime is rapidly iucreasing. * If his opinion aud his table are both truste worthy,’ says Mr. Gladden, ‘thea the relation of drunkenness to other crime cannot be what it has always been be- lieved to be, the relation of a priucipal couse. It is that the bird /mistakes the snake’s tongue, which the reptile keeps in constant motion, while it otherwise remaius perfectly still, for a lively worm, and gazes at it with the expectation of making food of it. The idea was suggested by ob-ervations at the Zoological Gardens, where the birds were frequently seen watching the tongues of the snekes. _—+—-—~<< oe -—-—__—_ The businees of the Irish Land Court still increases, and there are now 45,000 applica- tions before it for the reduction of rent.
