(By Uncle Joel Here's good news for P. E. I. V Not long after the Conference of 1840. the Rev. Francis Metherall was called upon to suffer a great sorrow in the loss of his beloved wife. Mrs. Metheraii had been called upon to share with her lius- band many hardships, and we are told she helped him in his work. especially at Vernon River. She led the singing and often conducted class and prayer meetings when Mr. Metherall was working the outer fields or circuits. When she passed on an infant and eight oth- er children were left in Mr. Meth- ernll‘s care" the eldest being but fourteen years of age. Funeral rites for Mrs. Metherall were per- formed by Capt. Marshall. whose vessel lay at inchor in Orwell Bay. The seeds sown in past years now began to produce abundant fruit. A mighty awakening among the people was evident on all sides, the desert places were beginning to blossom like the rose, and the gos- pel message took root in the hearts of men. Richard Cotton had been received into the Ministry. Absalom Plckings came from England to supply the place of Philip James. Mr. Cotton took over the Western and New London circuit, which included part of the Union Road and West Cape. But when Pickings arrived from the Old Country he took over these districts and Cot- ton was sent to the assistance of Francis Metherall. 8 I ORS", and they are Such shades And remember a Working together, these two ac- complished much good. Revival meetings were held at the home of James Sanders, there being no church in the district at. the time. But some time later Picklngs got himself mixed up in land specula- tions which led to his leaving the church of his calling and joining the Baptist Church. In 1842 came the "Great Re- vival". starting at the headquart- ers of the Island Missions. The work spread like a prairie fire through many districts. until fin- ally 120 persons stood under the banner of Jesus Christ. 1t was a fine thing for the Missionaries to know that at long last the baek-; ward and sinful settlers were be-‘ ginning to see the light and truth, ether features. really Our first shipment in months has just arrived and we're oll excited about the beautiful new Foil colors.
