An Ancient Military Devotion, The eating of three blades of grass “in token of the holy communion” was ! a recognized form of military devotion is, On the eve of battle his confession in the middle age knight would make to another, and then partake of svmbolical communion. It would not, be correct to speak of either this however, mony as “an efficacious substitute” for the sacraments of penance and the harist respectively. The practices do not even amount to sacramentals. They were simply devo- tions in honor of the blessed Eucharist —pious and formal expressions of the individual’s desire to communicate sac- ramentally, had the means been pres- ent. It may be, however, that in popu- jar estimation these practices were in some sort considered “substitutes” for the sacraments which were for the time being unobtainable.—Notes and at “j} . One cold day, however, the teacher noticed that lie was so very backward that he remained the whole time at the bottom of the class. This went on for some time and puz- zied the teacher until he noticed that the fire was near the bottom of the class. He immediately changed the class about, making the bottom the top. He then had the satisfaction of hear- ing all his questions fully answered by Spurgeon and that young bopeful keeping the same seat, the only differ- ence being that he was at the top ef the class instead of the bottom.—Spare hlomeunts. A Study In Hosc. The girl behind the counter said te the young man who appeared as though he knew just what he wanted to buy, “What can I do for you?’ “I was going to buy a nice pair of stockings for a woman. This is the right department?” “Yes. What size?” “IT thought I might leave that to you, as we are sort of related in our call- ing.” “What do you mean?” “Well, I’m a fireman—the man with the hese, don’t you see? As the head of this department you’re the woman with the hose. I haven't the slightest idea of what I want or what it should be or what it should cost.” “For your wife?’ “N»; I hoe my own row.” “So do I,” she laughed, hosier.” “They’re for my sister. And that’s all I know about the whole thing. She’s smaller than I am, but larger than you.” “I take eights.” “Then I should think she’d take six- teens.” He laughed to hear her laugh, and a whole row of customers waited. “It’s the best hose attachment you ever made,” he thought to aimself, and so it proved, for the cards are out and they are furnishing a regular birdcage of a flat in the north erd.—-Detroit Free Press. material and what “and as a Minard’s Liniment Relieves Neu- algia.
