There has been little or no severe iveather this ivliitei" and an increasing demand from all markets in the world for lumber which British Columbia alone can supply. The Japanese earthquake was re- sponslble for an influx of orders which B. C. mills are still filling; the building boom in Los Anleies has during thepast year resulted in millions of feet of Vancouver island lumber finding its way down to Southern California and there seems to he no decrease in orders from this quarter. _ 'l‘he eastern U. On their seventy odd miles? ‘of ivorking line from Victoria to Cowichan Lake. the Canadian National Railways alone show business-like figures for 1923. Their total exports for that year were 1i) million feet of lags and 15 million feet of lumber. Six big Lumber Companies and numerous smaller ones are operat- ing the timber limits on either side of this line and there are four saw-mills in operation, not counting the great Cameron Mills at Point Eliice, the Victoria term- inus of the Canadian National Ruli- ways, which have a capacity of three and a half million feet a montii. In 1923 the Cameron Logging Co. exported about 20 million feet all over the world and nearly every day there may be seen at Point Ellice a shill ivuitlng for its cargo or parcel of lumber. This Company have 1400 acres of timber at Camscot, 63 miles up the Canadian National Railway line. where they have been operating, but the timber here was found to he too heavy for n caterpillar tract- er so the Railway are putting in a special spur for them. This Company are building new camps at Mile 70, which will he working at the end of January, also at Mile 54, where they have fir and cedar to come out. Also at Mile 54 there is a crew getting out At Mile 53, Coipmans ifCom- a new Mill. There is another Mill at Mile 51 operated by the Napier Lumber Company, and two more at Dearholme. The Scottish Logging Company operate around Mile 05, freight- ing logs down the Canadian Nation- al Railways, and shipping them in booms-to British Columbia Mills in Victoria and Vancouver.
