is s OF NEWSLETTER 1 r’ . J tor-yeprogress with both pota many farmers the grain wait and pay attention to potatoes stead. No one wisdom of this policy. However. there still remains quite a large acreage of grain to be combined and combine owners and custom operators will continue to be in the posi- tion’,-of the good Samaritan. In tact we would like to urge that owners m e a very special effortto help those who still have grain to harvest. POTATO OUT A recent -sta coming out of Ottawa points out that of potatoes in b o t h Canada and the United States is expected to be lower than last year. The figures for the United States for the 26 fall stat- es indicated a, decline of six per although Maine is expect- ed to be up slightly. In view of the smaller crops and the anticipated increase in demand from processors in the United States and Canada, it is gic to assume that some improvement in the market may be anticipated o t h countries after the harvest has been comp . At the-present time in this province larger quantities of potatoes are being offered than dealers can conveniently handle and readily market. It is easy in ct need to understand the need of ‘potato growers for cash and where ‘there is inadequate storage the get them moved. How- ever, where at all possible it od busi- of present market prices and from the standpoint of improved pric- es later for growers not o force’ any more potatoes on the e v great risk involved for prophets on potatoes yet it is felt that growers should seek the advice of those familiar with the busi- ness before embarking on any CATTLE SALE Last week's sale of Holstein cattle at Moncton demonstrated that satisfactory returns can be had for large heifers close to freshening. Calves and open yearling: or animals not close to freshening were not in favour with the buyers. Size, and close- ness to production were of much more importance than type, production backing, and pedi- gree. There does appear to be a place for a sale of springing heifers, but for a sale of ani- mals on the basis of real qual- ity and pedigree caution should be the olic y. TURNIP HARVESTING The province's turnip acreage has b e e n tapering off as re- liance on them as livestock feed declines. There is little doubt on A iitlool<. Reported GOOd:i::’...°.r" , For Potato. Prices, Sales Last week’ saw very satisfac-' also no doubt that the labour involved makes them expensive and unpopular with many farin- Q ers. Turnip pulling has been tradi- tionally the final harvesting op- eration. It could be left until after Nov. 1 and this gave the opportunity of enjoying the job in very bad weather. There was a number of ways of doing th e job. but there was only on e right way and that was to bend the back. trim off the clay and roots and finally the , top. Years ago as the turnips were pulled they were thrown into heaps covered with tops. This served a rotection ' aroma which wafted through a mi house with a basement full of turnips. The dropping of four rows into one was a labour saver. but really did not save the b a ck. Cutting off -the top th a hoe and harrowing was a rough and ready system. The heater potato digger could also 3'; be used, but did not do a very g finished job. The cow has a pas- sion for turnips, but man's pas- sion has not kept pace. tar-nipeopiaortole of age for a travelling culture. Box 646 for application forms.
