The Hon. Charles Dalton in an able and most effective speech replied to the Leader of theOpposi`tion and brought the blush* of shame, for the first time _during the session, to the perennially smiling countenance of that imper- turable gentleman. Mr. Dalton in modest language referred to what_ he hadldone in connection with the Sanatorium which bears his name and said if there was a spark of honesty or gentlemanly conduct in Mr. Bell's _constitution he would be ashamed of the action he had taken in regard to this matter, Mr. Dalton’s speech is given in full in another part of this issue and will be read with appreciation and admiration by everyone who is interested in the province and in this magnificent institution _ _ Mr. J. j. johnson made a bitter and uncalled for attack upon Hon Mr. Kennedy and was called to order at the instance of the Premier for unparliamentary language. Mr. Johnston also got into trouble by an-1 nouncing that he had been appointed attorney by the owners of the Morwenna in a threatened action against the government, in utilizing his position as a representative of the people of the province in order togain information in support of his alleged claim. At the evening session, the_Hon. A. E. Arsenault delivered one of the most brilliant speeches ever heard in the House. There was a crowded audience who followed with breathless silence (only interrupted with spontaneous applause when the Hon. member made palpable hits at the expense of the Opposition,) his stirring and lucid address on the finances and ,legis- lative acts of the Government during the past four years. 1 One of the most amusing interludes was when Mr. Bell enquired whether certaincaustic remarks by’ Mr.. Arsenault applied to him Mr. Arsenault in uired if- . ` - ll the hon. member thought they did and the Leader laniely replied amidst laughter that he thought they did not. \ Mr. George E. Hughes, who followed occassioned an unexpected scene. He delivered an evidently care- fullyw prepared speech which had been for the most part committed to manuscript and it was when he departed from his text and proceeded to refer to the hay charges that. he fell foul of the Speaker. Mr. Hughes alleged that no Liberal got an opportunity' of supplying the hay contracts in this province and that this patronage was given wholly to the friends of the Government. Premier pointed out _that thc purchases of hay were made by the Imperial Govem-0 £“"!*E mommg.. The father absentmii'ldedly~replied, "oh noth- ing.” “Then how do you ‘know when to stop?" she ed. Mr. Bell doesn't know whento stop, simply bt! cause he says nothing relevant to the matter in hand. And this is the criticism of his friends. He failed to do so, 85 Every 9£li¢!,' member of the Opposition who has spoken so far has similarly failed. The whole of the criticism of the financial 'policy of the Government has been vague and indefinite. When challenged to point out a single item which they would have cut down the members of the _Opposition sat dumb or immediately began to change their tactics. Mr. Bell led the way in this respect and naturally his supporters followed suit. The Leader of the Opposition spoke for nearly four hours or just about double the length of time taken by the Premier. There was this additional difference: The Prernier's speech was full of facts and informa- tion which the public could appreciate whereas Mr.” Bell’s consisted largely of carping criticisms and littlenesses which would bring discredit to' a budding orator in a mock parliament. Mr. Bell concluded his four hours speech byblaming the alleged unpopu~ larity of the Premier for the reduced majority of the Government at the last election, a statement \vhie'h was received with' laughter by members on both sides of the House. Thus possibly, Mr. Bell has broken another record in 'his leadership in having to resume his seat amid shouts of ironical laughter instead of ap- preciative applause. -l__..)x(_._-..i. 105th REGIMENTAL FUND As previously announced the Regimental Bandj for the i05th has been organized and a full set of in? struments has been ordered at a cost of abou't»$i2oo.‘ This amount has to be raised either by the Regiment; or foriit; the Government makes no provision for band instruments.
