Of him. the Cal- gary Canadlan says: ‘ After -moving heaven and earth to get into the fighting line since the be- ginning of the war, Irving B. Howutt, l a. well known Edmonton barrister and attorney at law. was accepted Mon- day by Major Carson and the military authorities. Pte. Howatt, is a graduate in arts and law of Dalhousie University, and has been keen, from the very first to get after -the Hun. but owing to a de- fect in one of his eyes, his application to bc allowed to go to the front has been systematically turned down by the various military tribunals in western Canada. Mr. liowatt came to town and told tho military men that he did not want any commission or anything of the li-ind. llc was willing to take 'his chances on the battlefields of Fland- ers and France, and he contended that thc slight defect in the sight of one of his cyos would in no way interforc with his activ-ity on thc battlefield. lie wusbcfore the medical board. and after being carefully examined by the medical experts was passed,-‘ and immediatelyenlisted and reported for military service. Pte, Iiowatt was much pleased at »l-lie outcome of his long iight to get into tho army, stating that he owoil Major Carson a debt of gratitude for the interest he had taken in his case. ,Major Carson said -it was inspiring to see a highly educated man fighting his way into the army, and a marked contrasit when compared with the thousands of younger men who are doing everything possible to keep away from the colors. Pte. Howa-tt is 38 years old, and it is safe to say when hc gets on the fighting line there will he “something doing" or it will not be his fault. a 1 Ask for Mlnartre ana take no other siiin iiiigitiiiiiis HALIFAX.
