CNIB Helps Province’:-Blind Readjust To New Way Oi-life (Editor's note: This is the second in a series of articles concerning organizations tak- ing part in the province-wide United Fund campaign.) By JEAN MaclSAAC Guardian - Patriot Staff Writer The dark world of the blind need not be one of loneliness or seclusion. It is the purpose of the P.E.I. division of the Can- adian National Institute for the Blind to improve conditions for those pe 0 pl e of this province why are without their sight and also to prevent blindness in others. To carry out its objectives the CNIB in Prince Edward Island has budgeted for $13,825 in the U ted Fund campaign being held for the first time in th e province this month. There were 150 blind persons registered in the province as of March 1962. This is one more than a yew ago and 27 below the highest number ever record- ed for the Island. VAILIED PROGRAM Atthe CNIB centre in Char- lottfitown the Friendship Club of the‘Blind members carry out a varied program of social and recreational activities. when a man loses his sight he must depend on the sense of touch as well as those of hear- ing and smell to guide all his actions. Such training is given by the CNIB with the object of be as independent as possible.‘ In this connection a home tea- er spent two months at th e centre last fall instructing th e blind in braille, leatherwork. knitting. loop weaving, typing and chair caning. At the centre now chair caning is almost a full-time job. Last ye ar 10- blind people were employed full or part time under the auspices of the insti- tute. A total of 26 other regis- trants added to their income through work which they found through their own initiative. The registrants look forward to the visits of the field secre- tary during the year.
