Most people suppose that the manufacture ot tobacce consiste merely of taking the leaf and pressing and pressing it into plugs. The tact is, however, that the process is a very delicate one, and the least falee step will injure the flavor. The leaf must be carefally attended to for months afcer it leaves the planter’s hand. It must neither dry too quickly or too slowly, Even after it has reached the factory the utmost delicwy of manipulation is required. The weather must moisture in the air when it is pressed it will mould, and the s+me will happen if too much nioisture is sprinkled upon it for the purpose of opening the leaf. Agsir, if it is over- dried in the oven it will turn criep, and will nip the tongue in amoking. It is by careful atiention to all these points that the ‘‘Myrtle Navy” has been bronght to such perfection.
