NOVEMBER 23, 2006 SPORTS & NOTICES THE CADRE @ 6 Panthers Get Mixed Results in Weekend Hoops Action Josh Lewis Sports Editor The UPEI Panthers men’s and women’s basketball teams both split their games on the weekend at Acadia and Dalhousie. The men lost a 78-77 nailbiter to the Axemen on Saturday before exploding for a 94-80 win over the Tigers Sunday. Sherone Edwards led the Panthers on Sunday with 26 points and 10 rebounds, with Doug McKinney adding 24 points and 11 rebounds. New point guard Brent McLaren chipped in another 23 points. UPEI led 48-33 at the half. Saturday, Paulo Santana poured in 27 points and had 16 rebounds for the Axemen, who also got 20 points from Achuil Lual. McKinney led the visitors with 27 points. The women’s hoops squad was on the winning end of another one- point game in Acadia Saturday, with a 64-63 victory over the Axemen. The Panthers got 18 points each from Melissa-Anne Campbell and Lora Motton in the win, their first of the season, with Sharise Richards adding another 16. UPEI led 31-24 at the half. : Sunday, the Panthers broke down in the second half en route to a 71-51 loss at Dalhousie. Kathleen McNeil had 23 points and 10 boards for the Tigers, who moved into a tie for first place with UNB and Memorial. Jenna Kaye led the Panthers with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Panthers fall to Axemen, Huskies Josh Lewis Sports Editor The UPEI Panthers men’s hockey team continues to struggle, losing games to the Saint Mary’s Huskies and Acadia Axemen on the weekend to fall to 2-8-2 on the season. The Panthers fell behind 3-0 to the Axemen on Saturday night at MacLauchlan Arena before mounting a comeback that came up just short, losing the game 3-2. Erik Lundmark and Craig Foster scored for UPEI, with Acadia getting goals from Brody Todd, Blair Jarrett and Brad Horan with the game-winner. The Panthers played a solid game, outshooting the Axemen 30-25 and turning in a spectacular effort on the penalty kill, allowing just one goal on 13 Acadia power plays. Paul Drew made 22 saves in the loss. Foster scored his first goal of the season on the power play at 8:32 of the third to give the home team a fighting chance, but two penalties taken by Josh Patterson with just over four minutes left killed any chance of a comeback. Horan scored just 13 seconds into the second period to put Acadia ahead 3-0. The Panthers got on the board just over eight minutes later when Erik Lundmark blasted a shot from the point through the pads of Axemen goalie John Ceci. Brody Todd opened the scoring at 14:05 of the first after a Paul MacFarland shot deflected off his stick and past Drew. The Axemen went up 2-0 on Blair Jarrett’s power play goal at 18:06. MacFarland had three assists in the game. Friday night, the Panthers got a goal from Aaron Dawson early but ~ couldn’t hang on as the Huskies took the game 3-1 at MacLauchlan Arena. Marc Rancourt had two goals and Ryan Rorabeck added a tally for the Huskies, who outshot the Panthers 38-17. Dan Rudisuela, the nation’s leading point-getter, added an assist on Rancourt’s first goal 39 seconds into the second period.
