The career of Slr Samuel lewis, Companion of the Order oi St. Micheal and St. George, who died in Loudon on July 9, furnishes an ex- cellent argument for those who de- llre to refute the often-heard state- ment that when a negro becomes eminent it is because he has more or lege white blood in his velnl. t lr Samuel was of pure African parontage and was born ln Free- town. Sir Samuel won an exhibition for an essay on the law of real pro- perty in 1870, and, having passed the necessary examinations, was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1871.
