BACKGVROUNDSI The first approximate!!! defin- ite date in the history of Canada is July, 1534, Johan Jacques Cartier sighted and‘ touched the shores of what is now Prince Edward Island. The Island received its present name from Edward, Duh of Kent, father of the then reigning Queen Victoria; previously the Island was called Isle St. Jean. French history is _ interwoven with the history of Prince. Edward. Island,. and. in August of this year a notable cele- bration .commemorating Jacques Cartiefs arrival on these shores four hundred years ago took place in Charlottetown, the Capital City. Previous to the landing of‘ the French, Prince Edward Island ‘was inhabited only by Indians, who had made no efiort to cultivate the soil, but lived by the products of forest, river and stream. The basic stock of the Island was Scotch, English, Irish and Acadian French, and this was aug_- mented in the period o! the Revolu- tionary War by immigrants Irom New England who remained loyal to Great Britain. Later immigration changed the stock but little, 0n this Island the pioneer spirit is the background against which is silhouetted generations o! sturdy, successful farmers who have undergone handicaps and privations in by-gone days to pass to the pres- ent generation a land rich in agri- cultural possessions. ~ Prince Edward Island is about one hundred and forty-five miles in HON. The very nature of the Island, particularly in winter when, previous to the modern transporta- tion facilities, there was no method of connection with the mainland. precipitated a condition wherein “the survival of the fittest” was natural law; consequently the stock of Prince Edward Island today has a background of rugged men pos- sessing sterling qualities for hard work and courageous living. To these men who worked and toiled in the past, giving of their best for the progressive develop- ment of Prince Edward Island, we owe a deep debt of gratitude, for without their wisdom, courage and enterprise, our fair Province of today could never have materialized. 1 W.
