He expects to continue his studies in medicine at McGill University next year. At the regular meeting of Union Division, No. 45, S. 0. '1‘., the mem- bers of that Division waited on Bro. Ira N. McKay, previous to his dc- parture for Western Canada, and on behalf of the Division he was pres- ented with an address which road as follows:-lt is with much surprise, mingled with regret, that we, youi sisters 'and brothers of Union Divi- sion, hear of your intention to leavi our midst for Western Canada. Wt shall feel the loss of another good and faithful member when you are absent from us. We belicve that you have always taken the stand held by every true Son of Temperance, in keeping the vows which you of your own free will took on entering our Order, and we hope you will still continue to observe those obligations though far away from Union Divi- sion. You are going to a country where many opportunities await you which greatly exceed those of this Province. But, as thc opportunities on one hand appear to he superior to ours, ao, on the other handmany temptations will arise which you have never been called upon to rc- sist in your native land, but we trust that as you have been enabled to overcome thc few temptations at home so you will receive strength to resist the greater ones in the faf' West. In conclusion wc wish you thc hest of health and prosperity in whatever sphere of life you may bc called upon to enter; and, whenever you can find an opportunity of being with us again in old Union Division you may feel assured that you will be welcomed in our midst. Signed in "L.'P. and T., Peuzle Howard, Amy Sinclair, Peter Sinclhir. Bro. McKay thanked the Division for the address and in lowing terms told the members of bds intention to do all in his power to help along the tempcrance cause wherever hc might have the privilege of doing so. The late Mr Dewar was the second youngest of tho five sons ofthe late Ilobert Dewar, Earp., of Montague, who entered into rest fifty-seven years ago. Five sisters survive him., namely: Annie. P. A. A. A. at the Abegweit Grounds. Nothing occurred to mar the pleas- ure of the great audience--ai esti- mate places thc sttendance at 3000- during the whole evening, tho perfect order and equally perfect manage' ment were contributing factors to wards what was the greatest athlet ic event in the history of 1'. ld. l athletics since the institution of tlu Inter-provincial Association. To the Abegweits, who had tin meet iu hand, falls the credit of the complete success of the Champion- ships of 1910. They lookcd nftor every one of the thousand minute de- tails in connection with the conduct- ing of the championships this year in a manner that left nothing to bc _ desired either to add to the conven- ience of the competitors, to facili- tate the smooth running od of the events or to make for the full on- joyment of what was the greatest crowd ever assembled on the Abeg- weit Grounds. ‘ And the crowd enjoyed every one of the keenly contested events. Yes, and expressed their appreciation of the work of their favorites, their friends or the visiting competitors in a way which convinced the officials of the entire success of their untlring efforts of the past few weeks. The visiting athletics speak in the highest terms of appreciation of the treatment accorded 'them at the hands of the management. Every courtesy was extended to them dur- ing their stay here. They were heart- ily welcomed by the olliclals and yes- terday were treated to a delightful drive around the city and suburbs. Fréddy Cameron, the speed marvel of Amherst, said Charlottetown was a sporty town and he was del-ighted o come here every available oppor- unity. " ' _ The merchants of the city closed their stores at five o’clock after do- ing a big day's business from the many customers who took advantage of the excursion rates. About 1200 came to the city on the special trains and the Lady Sybil brought over 250 from Picton and connecting points. _ l The first event, the pole vault, was called at six o’clock sharp, and every event thereafter followed almost pre- cisely on time and without the many tedious delays which generally mark athletic contests. The vault was won by Harley, for the Vics, at 10 ft 4 in. Stanway and Duffy jumping pil for second place. = The 100 yards dash was very inter- esting, though Schaefer, the Halifax Wanderer, won handily in 10 2-5 Stan- ley- and Covey had to run of! for sec- ond place. The hammer throw was a victory for Inverness, J. A. Kennedy, who afterwards attempted to break the Maritime record in an exhibition throw without success. Cameron, of Picton won the high rather easily. Megarity of St. John defeated Tur- ner of Amherst and Hughes of this city in an exciting and closely fought out 220 yards for boys. The 220 yards dash was keenly con- tested, thc honors going to Schaefer, with Stanley second and Paul third. J. D. Kennedy of Inverness, won the 16 pound shot with a good putt -40 ft. Bin. The bicycle events were good and the presence of two fast men from Halifax made them specially inter- esting. ln the Half mile event Prowse, .Winchester and Gaudet fin- ished in the order named, all in a bunch. The other race-one mile- also went to Prowse, Pcarden second and Smith of Halifax third. Some people differed from the judges in giving the victory to Prowse. The mile run was captured by Freddy Cameron in one second be- hind record time. Stirling and Walsh of St. John, following the little Champion. The quarter mile was concluded 'ny an exceedingly close finish, Hooper winning from Schae- fer hy a fcw hairs, with Stanley a dangerous third. Hooper was' caught by one timer at 51 flat and two caught him at 511-5. Michael Paul was the victor in the half mile run, beating Harley out in a splendid finish after a sprint from second place. The~five mile run was .one .oi the biggest events on the score card. Cameron, with the Ramblers -purple and white, took the lead from the start and was never headed finishing 172-5 seconds behind his own re- cord for the distance and doing it in time that has only been beaten twice before. Michael Thomas’ performance was a splendid one, the Indian fol- lowing the dect champion to the fin- ish and only being beaten out by a- bout thirty yards. Stirling, of St. John, who was considered too fast for Thomas and a dangerous man for Cameron met defeat at the hands of this pair but he put up a gamey fight to the finish and never lagged. Harley dropped u\lt in the fifth lap until which -time he was running well. ‘ Parker Hooper won the hurdles neatly making the good time of 191-5. Duffy of the Vics and Cam- eron of Picton were close competi- tors for second placc,.the former winning out. SUMMARY os' TRACK EVENTS. Poms VAULT. Ist--H. Harlcy, Vics. 2nd-W.
