Farmer Brown's boy hurried to what he calls Bob White's castle. It is a big pile of brush prepared especially for Bob White and his family. and so arranged that it ls not packed too tightly to ‘the ground. but loosely enough for the Bob Whites to easily creep about under it. yet so that they cannot be folloii ed by any one bigger than themselves. Under that brush they are safe from Reddy Fox. Black Pussy the Cat and oLher four-footed hunters and from all feathered limiters. Only Shadow the Weasel or his slightly bigger cousin, Billy Mink. could follow Llzem under there. - The pile ci‘ brush was now e ivhlte mound with only the ends of the sticks shoiving here and there. The snow had drifted around it. and. as everyiiizere else, had become covered with a thick icy crust. If the Bob Whites were in there, they couldn't get out lf they tried. They were prisoners 1n their own castle. First he broke ll e crust on the upper part of the pile. the roof of the castle, and knocked it off. This wasn't done for the Dob Whites. but to make openings for smaller feathered folks who might need lo dodge into tlie brush to escape a. Hawk or Owl. Burgess) He shoveled out the snow that had blown into the shelter that a lot of them looked on that brush as their castle. too; not Just Bob Whites. It really was a com- munlty castle. Then the crust close around the pile was broken. and the snow Jioveled away down to the ground. That made it possible for Bob White who might be in there to get out at more than one place They were there, for as he worked Farmer Brown's boy heard little sounds that told liim not only that they ivere there but that they were aliie. He. cleared auav the snow from quite a space oii one side and there scattered a plentiful supply of grain. He was not out of ught before Bob White and all his flock were out there picking it up as ii’ stai-"riiig. as indeed they W92?‘ l-le hurried on !!1l0 the Green Forest. He was more worried now than he had been over the Bob Whites. He had known exactly where to look for the latter. He had been sin-e iliat if they were in the neighborhood they were under that brush. But i! those Grouse were trapped under the crust how could he hope to find them? He headed straight for a cer- tain place “here in the late fall and early winter he had seen the bzg birds frequently. In a sheltered place there he had bulit a rough leari~to oi‘ evergreen boughs for a feeding place inbacl weather. and had taken food there before. As he drew near it now two big brown birds with heads held high in alarm ivalked out of it. With a roar of stout wings they took to the air and in a moment were out of sight bcliind the trees. but not before he had recognized them. "Oid ‘Ihunderer and his mate. I honed they ivould be too suiart to be trapper! ciidei the ice!" he exclaimed. Then he added soberiy. "But where are the three younger ones I often saw amurid ivith them alter the hunting season was over? ‘They should be around here 110w if they haven't been caught by Rfiddll Fox. or Yoivler tlie Bob Cat. or Hooty the Oiil. or ‘Terror the Goshaivk, and it isn't lLkely that all three have been caught.’ He shovelerl out the snow that Iiad blown into the shelter. He spread a bountiful supply of corn and buckwheat Ull the ground in the shelter, all tlie time keeping his eyes open for some sign of the missing Grouse. He sat clown on a small log in the shelter and began l0 Carefully study the surroundings forlsome sigh that more than Thunder-er and Mrs. Grouse had been around there this morning.
