THE CADRE, OCTOBER 8*, ‘1974, PAGE '4~ bulls cunt. tram pg. 2 this society). I'm sorry I can't live up to your ideas of sophisticatibn since they aren't the same as mine. Sixthly, if I thought I was, perfect and not one of the jackasses of which I sonetimes write about, I wouldn't be here, I’d be God" Finally, £_deemed that engagement tmportant enough to be the "Poke in the Ribs" because I have a right to my opinion too, just like you. JO Dear Radio C.S.U.R. Excuse my ignorance, but I find that your articles don't really say anything. I find it hard to apprec— iate your comments because I don't know what "funky" is. What is a "nice haunt— ing sadness". Your slang is vague and general. How about approaching music through the author. What do you thinkvthe sing- er or group is doing? Do you think he is protesting, commenting or sharing ex- perience? How does he comm- and and control his instru— ‘ ments, his group his style' and skill. - Our artists are our poets. They reflect the feeling and psychic of our age. How does C.S.U.R. as the people who introduce us to the voice and symbol of our age feel. You insult a real artist everytime you suggest that he has produced a reasonably commercial product. I'm not interested in a good buy, but I would appreciate your insight on music. You intent is good, but could think a little more. Expecting more, D. MacDonald Dear Diane, Your comment on the record 'reviews is appreciated and demonstrates why there are so many critics. A critic tries to put down his ideas in terms he can understand as well as the public. Uh- fortunately, not everyone explains his.feelings in the same terms and context but I will try to be more explicit. Funky muSic generally refers to dance music pro- duced by black performers. Some examples are "Super— stition" by Stevie Wonder, "war" by Edwin Starr, and "Keep On Trunkin" by Eddie Kendricks. "Nice haunting sadness" refers to a feeling a song_ may give you in which the melody tends to make you think of some incident or pleasantly quiet scene, the music tends to act as a background for thought. You definately read me wrong when you refer to a commercial product. These are not necessary poor and I am definately not insultd ing a song by saying that it will sell. It is merely the opinion that more people will appreciate and purchase this particular song over another song. For example, "Creepin" on Grand Funk album "Shinin On" is of less commercial value than - "Locomotion". But no one can say "Locomotion" is musical garbage by any means. With respect to group histories, I'd like to get~ into those; they require research which I’d like to start in the future. Otherwise, it's difficult to understand exactly what a group is doing, what they have done and what they'll be doing. MCMP Dear Member of the Herd and any other disin— terested persons. Let's get a few things straight. In your letter to the editor in the Oct; lst issue of the CADRE, you name a few examples of‘ things or events on campus that either disgust you or make you sick. If you de- You deserve a break today. Mceonald's I ® \ YOU ‘ leted all the misquoted facts and figures you would- n't have had a letter to the editor at all. You say that everything this year is being run by a few elites, for a few elites. (This makes 122 sick). You say y0u were refused admission to the weekly "animal act" by an elitist power-tripping campus cop. (This makes 123 sick.) You say we have an un— democratic campus and every; one is led like a herd ’of cattle and treated with less respect. (This makes 193 sick.) YOU MAKE @_ SICK! —_Ih begin with, you were too gutless to sign your letter. If you're so anx— ious to have a say on this "undemocratic campus", then stand up and say it, in— stead of hiding behind a, pen. . You're main "beef" seems to be that everything is run by an elite. I presume you mean the Executive or part thereof, and perhaps some Committee Chairmen. How can it be anything else? If there is only a handful of people willing to do anything around hefe, it will remain an elite. Would yOu prefer it if we' all quit and left you with-" DIRK EDITOR -- - "Board of Governors, Senate or Council ithay be for you." out you're Pig & Whistle? \Do you think we are anxious to run everything for our own sakes? You and the rest/ of your herd on this campus are lazy, inconsiderate and undeserving. Why should I, or anyone else bust their .ass for you? Because you paid Student Union fees? NO WAY 1 Because I get a salary of $1,000 for the year and you thihk you own me? NO WAY I If you want to excercise your rights, come into the Student Union bffice (-if you know where it is)*and--; start talking. I have yet >~ to refuse to listen to any-, one: When you get\there and see some friends talk- ing, don't mistake it for an elite. I don't really expect you to shOw up and declare your beefs face to face. Out of 1425 students on this campus only 35 showed up to dO’SO at the.General Meeting. By the way, are they an elite? Don't burp your complaints down a beer bottle where nobody can hear them. If you're too gutless to come yourself, send a messenger. Let's get it_out“in the~ open. I ~ I 100% Sincerely yours -Gordon Campbell President U.P.E.I.S.U. 'Bear Member of the Herd, The first remark that I. wduld like to comment on, k contained in your letter [in the Oct. lst issue, is "...that everything is be- ing run this year as usual, by a few elites for a few= ' nelites." I would like to remind you that you elected these elites last February. These"e1ites", as,you call them, are the very few people on campus who are» willing to donate a lot of . ~ «It. Is. 13
