This volnmeot eleven chapters and an appendix" gives an account or one of the most interesting figures inthe history of P. E. Island. Rev. Donald McDonald was born in Perthshire. Scotland, January lst, 1837, and departed this life at Sonthport, P. E. I., Feby. 215%, 1867, aged 84 years. The first chapter treats of the first forty-tour years of his life work—including two years'of missionary work in Cape Breton. In 1826 he landed on P- E. Island “with the history of which his name will ever be connected.” In the second chapterwe have an account of his conversion and the beginning of the first great revival under his ministry. “The Progress of the Revival?» is the subject of the third chapter." Here the author shows hirness and common sense in his treatment of this difficult question. is used by some “to express the whole work of the spirit? upon the soul." Others, mean only the outward when they speak of‘the “work”. Confus- ion is caused by this ambiguous use ofthe word. In the next chapter we follow Mr Rain floats mommies Rubber; goats :5 , - Coat at $8. $10 Or $12.00. Chapter VII deals with “miscellaneous” subjects and Chap- ter VIII With “The Second Revival 1860- ‘ 61." In Chapter IX we hai an account or Mr. McDonald’s illness and death. The subject of the tenth Chapter is the “invo-_ luntary motions” while the last Chapter is taken up with Mr. McDonald as an _author. Many will be pleased to see the excellent likeness of this well known preacher with which the volume opens also the vie us of his birth place, the monument that marks his grave at Dr- well Head Church and of the church at DeSable as it was in Mr.McDouald’s time. - There isalsoa good likeness of Ewen Lamont one of Mr. McDonald’s‘gitted eld- ers and the author of the» interesting ap- pendix at the'eud ot the volume. The - mechanical work is: credit to the‘publish- ers;a tow errors will beremoved inaucond edition; which we predict willbe for before many years. The volume mark-l es profitable and interesting reading, out tainly better than the‘rtading matter which forms the mental pabulum else > many modern readers. We congratulate the author upon the excellency oi the ve- lume and trust that his labor or love may result in giving the public a truer appreciation of the work and worth of a remarkable servant of God, a suc- cessful soul winner, a preacher of rare power and eloquence, and a christian who literally gave his all to advance the interests of the religion of our Lord.
