The mayor, -here on a business trip. said plans for the hunt have been approved by the humane society and the department of lands and forests. “It will be strictly a sporting event.” Mayor Del Villano offered to supply bearskins for the guards regimem after reading a news item last month which reported the guardsmen were short of skins to refurnish their worn busbys—the tall black hats which distinguish their dress uniforms A later London report . said 6,000 bearskins would be needed. This touched off a flood of letters to the Timmins mayor protesting such a “wanton slaughter.” An editorial in The Times of Summerside Bear For Busby Hunt Will Not Be Slaual ler London Friday said the idea of the British Anmy accepi'ng a gift involving slaughter that would net otherwise take place is “not pretty.” the Times also wondered ‘if the mass hunt was really necessary. “We never at ary time said we were going to kill 6,000 bears and the guards havef’t asked us to,” the mayor explained. “They teld us they have 3,000 hats and about 300 need replacement each year.” No goal has been set for the hunt which will take place when the snow leaves the Northern On- tario bush and the bears emerge from hibernation — probably in the early part of May. The skins are at their prime in May and this usually lasts for two or three weeks. Only prime skins are suitable and it takes a whole bearskin for each hat. An organized force of about 60 you the complete line. HOLMAN LIMITED Your Frigidaire Dealer ymen will take part in the Tim- mins hunt, Other groups at Coch- rane, New Lskeard, Kirkland Lake and North Bay have offered to stage hunts in their areas. Plans for shipping the skins to London are stil] incomplete. They will be shipped raw, if possible, to let the guards handle the tanning €¢xpense which runs about ‘$15 a skin. The mayor said officials of On- tario ‘House in London have of- fered to help arrange the ship- ping to eliminate import duty and red tape. But if it becomes necessary to. have the _ skins net know where the financing will come from. It's — possible... some... bear bounty. But this only ap- plies in agricultural townships and it’s expected most of the animals will be shot outside these townships. \ KENSINGTON The many friends of Mrs. John Whitehead will be glad to know that her health has continued to improve since returning from Charlottetown to Clinton, where she is the guest of her son-in- law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. tanned before shipment he does. revenue, might be obtained from the $10 Don Taylor. : His many friends will be glad to know Mr. William Ber- nard is a good recovery from his recent illness at his home at Kensington.
