E.I. l The Story Of This Year’s Provincial Exhibition On Monday evening August 16th when the hour of eight o'clock ar-l rlves and the opening ceremonies start in the Paton Pavilion, Exhibition oi i937 will be ushered on its way to what ls believed will be the most successful year in its history. .Evcr since the change oi dates from late September to August W85 made there has been a steady improvement shown. Thousands of dollars have been spent on the grounds annually ‘in new buildings and improvements, until today they present an appearance that evokes the greatest admiration from the most critical visitor. Forward strides have not been confined to appearance and ao- commodation for entries. The Prize List has been revamped and more money added and all that yvas out of date has been discard- ed and the most modern and utilitarian classes substituted. The stock breeders have been consulted freely in all changes. also the ladies leading artists and other author- ities have been called in to advise with the result that this season's Prize List is receiving favorable comment from all classes of peo- ple and an increased list of e11- trles is expected. LIVE STOCK ENTRIES Live stock, horses, cattle, sheep mid swine are the very backbone of Agriculture in the Garden of the Gulf. and it is from these sources that the Exhibition draws its greatest support. It is interesting to watch the judging at the horse ring and cat- tle rlng on show days. and see the hundreds of farmers, many of them accompanied by their wives. who spend hour after hour closely fol- lowing the Judges as they walk around among the siti-ruals and mnke their selections. Many of these farmers are excellent Judges themselves. This year the judging will be done in a new show ring con- structed on the old site in front of the ltialn Building, but en- larged to one-tenth of a mile and with banked turns so that horses can speed around at quite a rate hooked to vehicles or saddle. The new ring is neatly fenced and presents all attractive appearance with its white and green trimmings. The seating cupacity has been en- larged about fifty per cent. A person unacqualnted with the Province and its people would per- haps conclude that its ninety-odd thousand people and small area. would be inacapable oi’ producing live stock that could compete against the larger provinces, but this would be an erroneous idea as the prize winners from the Prince Edward Island Exhibition can and do go to other fairs on the mainland and win in the most select company. That ivns the ideal that the pro- moters of the Exhibition had in the past-to develop the very best in this Proitnce so that the hus- bandman could reap a. reward both in achievement and in dollars and cents. Certainly some of the glory, the greatness and fame that is the Island's as n stock breeding centre can be accorded to the Ex- hibition. The cattle classes this year are expected to have a, total number of exhibits reaching to 1.000. Horses of various types will number over 400 and this does not include Rid- ing Club horses, just the standard breds that are useful around the farm and for racing and the gen- eral purpose young and old. Sheep. pigs and poultry will have largo quotas and as usual will be top specimens of their classes. MAIN BUILDING The Main Building is a beatiti- ful structure, not made of brick or stone-for if it was it could not be such an architectural achievement —but constructed of wood. and with its attractively colored win- dows, its fresh coat of muresco, white with tlntings of Oporto red. it stands out vividly, an Exhibition gem. The interior has been decorated by artists with an entirely new scheme. Everywhere there is a profusion of colored bunting, Chin- ese lanterns, colored lights, flags and ell that the deft handiwork of an interior decorator can de- vise to make it a thing of beauty us well as oi utility, for its pur- pose lnd existence is to display the fruits, flowers, dairy products and industrial exhibits common to the Garden of the Gulf. On the main floor hnudreds of feet of tables with separate com- partments have been placed, which hold many exhibits. Flanking on all sides are the booths occupied by merchants and leaders of in- dustry who have gone to consider- able expense to make them at- tractive. A feature this year that is nt- tractlng more than ordinary at- tention is the Floral Competitions. towards which His Honor, Lt-Gov- ernor George D. DeBlols has ot- fered $100 in prizes. Horticultur- ists throughout the Province will no doubt vie with each other in endeuvoring to win one of the valuable prizes. Upstairs in the Main Building will be found the art. needlework. hooked rugs. household science, school childrens collections and many other interesting exhibits. HORSE SHOW For years the Exhibition carried on without a Horse Show. This has been changed and it is duo largely to the formation of the charlottetown Riding Club. whose manbero have hssod man! fine riding and show animals. On Tuesday. Wednesday, Thirs- dq and Ends! evgniill r l beautiful horses will be exhibited‘ by their riders in the show arena Opposite the Grand Stand. This the splendid arena. which is 100 by 250 Prince Eldward Island Provincial feet, is lighted by 24,000 candle power, tihe greatest illumination‘ cost of Toronto. ' The lights are‘ so pieced, that no shadows are‘ thrown. thereby making it safe for the riding and jumping pgf- formanocs which are staged on these nights. Not only will the horses be beautifully turned out but the riders will be perfectly cos- tumed. In addition to the-Char- lottetown Riding Club it is ex- pected that the Halifax Riding Club will also send some oi its best horses. VAUDEVILLE PROGRAM An Exhibition without a high- class Vaudeville program would be a very flat aiffill‘, and each year the Prince Edward Island Fair has been improving its vaudeville, this year presenting its patrons with the best in its history‘. and certainly by far the most expensive. It includes the Four Kings oi the Air, a most sensational hirzlt act which is coining direct from sunny California to Clmrlottvtruvn. It will be the first appearuuce oi the Kings in Canada. Other hiuhwlnss acts are the Rrxolzi Troupe. Ro-l berttfs Animal Circus. the Flying’ Buyers and Young Lmlr-ll and1 Company. As good us the Vaude- ville pi-ouruiiis have hwcu in the post it is <-\')il‘(‘li‘<i tho‘ this year's program will be even better. :————— ‘k HORSE RACES Horse racing has always been a big feature at the Exhibition and this year it will be bigger than ever. There will be four days. Tuesday. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. with l2 classes and several dash races as added features. The program of races on TUPS- day. \Vc(liiestlay, Thursday and Friday will be interspersed with Vauthsvlllo. The first heat vvlll be called at two o'clock sharp and the whole program completed about 5 p.m. Everything goes like clock-work at Charlottetown, the idea boliig to keep up the excite- ment from start to finish.
