Some interesting historic facts are noted in the current number of the P. E. _ Island Magazine. Among these isthat the ltlrst vessel propelled by steam to visit Jharlottetown harbor was the Richard Smith, a small craft which came from Pictou on 10th, August 1830. In the f.o1-” lowing year, in September 1881, the Royal william of 1270 tens, bum at Quebec, called at this port on her way to Halifax. This steamer was the first to cross the Atlantic by the unaided power of steam, which she did in 1883, when she crossed from Picton to Gravesend. This remarkable event is commemorated by a brass tablet in the corridor of the House of Commons, Ottawa. In the current number of the P. E. Is- land Magazine, which is issued to-day, Mr. Archibald Irwin announces his re- tirement from tha Examiner and that he will in future devote his time and enor- gies wholly tothe Magazine. There isa full bill table of readible and interesting: ar- ticles, one of which is reproduced in our issue of to-day. The second article of a series on Our School System, from the pen of Judge Warburton, gives promise that his exhaustive treatment of the subject will, whenfdeveloped prove of great value. It is yet two early in the seriesto say more. _We bespeak for the Magazine that widely extended patron- age and support which it deserves at the hands of the reading public of the Island. The recent fire in Montreal which des- troyed property valued at four millions of dollars, affords another illustration of Ithe almost impossibility of constructing buildings that will be fireproof. The fire in this case broke out in the interior of a mercantile establishment, which fact is in no way remarkable. But that it should spread to and destroy a magnificent stone structure such as the Board of Trade building seems strage. In this great structure which cost a half million dollars there were about 200 oliices. The burned district on St. Paul, St. Peter and St. Sacrament streets included a number of the great. wholesale empsriums of Montreal. Among those who suffered were the wellknown firms of Sax Sc Co., H. A. Nelson, Laporte, Martin & Co., Coris'_ine, Silverman 8: Bouler, J. Nirsch, F. Cohen Sc Co, Burnstine Sc \Volseley, H. Levy, Hiram Johnson, Bell, Simpson Sc Co., the Davidson Manufacturing Co;, H. NV. Decourtney, Seybold Son 85 Co., British American O‘.'cral1;Co., Gilmour Bros, B. Levin Sc Co., and others.
