Aug. 6--_-All Great Britain is writhing in the grip of the war fever. The old Anglo-Saxon eagerness for battle once it is precipitated is shown in the faces of the people watching bulletin boards and in the enthusiasm with which the news of naval and land engagements are being followed. Everybody recognises that the British Government exerted itself to avert 'the_great calamity that has befallen Europe, and the decision of the Government to act promptly in line with France. Russia and Belgium in resisting German aggression is universally applauded. _ The h_um of commerce has been suppressed by the tramp of armed men and strains of martial music. Business is at a standstill and the appeal of the War-Office for men to fight for King and country in the “Greatest war in the world`s history" has met with amazing response. Fully 1,500,000 men,.acco1-ding to present indications. are available for the land forces of the Country. . s|'|'UA'|'|0N German aeroplane floating over AjllllI'\\\\\\\VIl////If-'$\\\\YIII/§\\\\\\\\\\7IIlllIIII/A\\\\§\\\\\\Yh\\\\\\1|lllll "v-u'.;". ‘ _ - .__ » '-1 i ' 1 . _ ,.1 ,i - "v ..~.'-“»i»:..¢:‘.'-.~ ’- “"» '~ fi fir"-'-.~ .ii ‘if-f"'.;<"»‘-.‘ . i “ ' » " 1 . . . . . . , f-pai. -1. , ra'-1 .-»::`i",' = iii '*;.~"‘-’ . Fears for a commercial panic have been eased by. the reduction in the Bank rate from 10 to 6 per cent., and the Chancellor of the Exche- 4|uor’s unnouncouzieut that the situa- tion does not wurrnnt recourse to u paper currency. ’I`be first decisive sea fight between Britain and Germany took place oil Liege was shattered by Belgian aer- ial guns and the occupants, six ofll- cers, killed. Yesterday two transatlantic liners were escorted by a llritish ue/in-of-war to that port.
