One writer has raked up Chinese history, wherein it appears, that away back in the time when the famous Chinese wall was building, before the use of gas wells was dise covered, a terrible explosion took place. he big wells in some way got the start of the little ones, so that enormous volumes of air was sucked down into those subterapean magazines. When the air reached certain propor sions, the whole thing went off like 4 leaky gasoline stove. The result was horrible in the destructiou of lives. The same writer predicts similar conditions underlying the great natural gas belt of this country, trom Toledo, through Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, whereby that whole vast region might be ripped up to the depth of 1500 feet, leaving a chaem for the waters of the great lakes to pour down into blotting out every living human being in this now densly populated valley from the face of the , earth. Phat writer might easily have shown further, that throughout our whole country not only in densely populated regions and cities, but in country and village houses as well, natural gases tar more dangerous than is found in the lake regions, are carrying off not only “‘pig-tail” Chinamen, but our own faim- | ities and friends, durning the hot waves of July and August. Scores of people are dying daily from typhoid fever, diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera- morbus, and infant summer complaints; all caused by poisonous gases and ferments, far worse than hydrogen gas or dynamite in their explosions. Fortunately this latter danger can all be averted, by the use of a simple old fashioned remedy, Johnson's Anodyne Lini- ment, used internally, as explained in a pam. phiet sent free to anyone, by I. 8. Johnson & Co., Boston, Mass. No matter if you have used this remedy before, it will pay you to get a bottle and read the direction, or send for the pamphlet just to learn how to use it economically. a2 d6éi wli A Serpent in the Sky. STRANGE PHENOMENON SEEN BY THOMPSON OF THE TRINACRIA, CAPTAIN One of the strangest phenomena ever wit- nessed at sea was described a few days ago by Captain Thompson, of the Anchor liner Trinacria, now in New York. It was in brief an earthquake shock at sea on July 15th; followed by the appearance in the sky of a huge fiery serpent, which stretched from the zenith to the horizon. The boat was in latitude 41 deg. 28 min., longitude 65 degrees south of Cape Sable. An earthquake shock from the northwest was felt at 7 o'clock in the evening. The vibration caused the pilot boat to tremble, but the sea remained calm. The shock was unmistakably that of an earth. quake. Hardly had the shock subsided when a streak of light was seen extending from the | in the form | zevith to the northwest horizon of a huge serpent. The reptile gradually tapered from the head, which appeared to be reared high in the air, to the tail near the horizon, The serpentine form in the sky lasted about an hour and then gradually faded. Capt. Thompson said he had never seen any- thing like it before. — Crisp and Casual. There are 300,000 commercial travellers in the United States. Arizona has more newepapers to its popula- tion than any other state or territory. Portland, Me., exported $1,500,000 worth of lobsters during the jast three monthe. Of the fires of 1891, 64 per cent. were due to lamps and only 4 per cent to electricity. One remark of Sir John Macdonald is appropriate at this juncture. “We cannot check Manitoba.” The Atlanta Constitution announced the other day that a new college was to be corner- atoned.” The aggregate wealth of the United States is placed at 263,648,000,000 and that of Great Britain at $50,000,000, 000.
