Tele- graph, who has just returned from a tour : . 7 7 . the United States, furnishes the So 2 s 2 yalrior of thir Wgar following from his netes on the beet-root sugar industry in Maine :— ‘*By « great deal of effert the Maine Sugar Beet Company got the farmers of _Maine, on whom it chietly depends, to promise to pro- vide some 12,000 tons of beets, at a cost, ex- f freight, of about $60,000, which sum is being paid out; the beets are nearly all de- livered and some of them are manufactured. The beevs were grown on about 1,300 acres, x only nme and a half tons an acre. s viel 1 of saccharine matter, ‘in the shape of suvar ani molasses, is about 12 per cent., which makes about 1,500 tons on the stock of this year. The Company.farnish the best seed. in order to make sure of its purity and soundness, and, as the manager told the writer, are well satislied with the sugar-bear- ing properties of beets grown in this country, and would expect a good yield from beets grown in the Maritime Province, if only the seek wer? prope rly selected. It does not take the factory long to dispose of all the beets it ;it can handie frem 125 to 140 tons clusive averavil Va ’ avy > rm Aut can get, of beets a day and make from 15 to 17 tons of sugar an | molasses. The number of hands ° ° : }2RO ond th. £1. Der ; employe is about 150 and the monthly pay roll 86,000. ‘‘Now as to the commercial results. As compare with last year, when the supply of beets was Very small, the Company feel de- cidely encouraged. They see their way to- wards go tting a fair return for the $50,000 lately invested in new machinery purchased in Germiny; $50,000 more in other plant, most of which can be made here, and for the reut they pay forthe buildings of the Forest City Sucar Refinery. In this calculation there ar: some contingent elements which enter. They expect to sell their refuse lime and refare palp as fertilizers at a moderate price. ‘he treasurer, Dr. Blackwell, esti- mates the value of what they will this year have to lispose of at $10,(0) if it were in Germany, but here the people, as vet, require to be educated the use of if. Thus far the lime is offered gratis, and the pulp at a nominal price. Itis pronounced to be a most valuable fertilizer by all writers on beet cul ture. If the Company cannot get a better price for their refusc, they may have to de- crease the price offered for the beets. ‘¢On the other hand, the farmers who grow the beets; and who fizd them valuable for feeding cattle, do not thirk the price received very remunerative and they gramble because they have to sell by the long ton of 2,240 pounds; which is not the ton by which sugar is sold. Iiut then there are impurities con- nected with the beets as they are taken from the soil, and the Company's agents say that when the beets are cleansed, the weight will be found to be reduced to 2,000 pounds at least. It is likely, however, that the farmers of Maine, ectc., will not decrease the quantities of beets grown next year, ard that the Com- pany will contract at about the same prices, trusting tat time will give them an advanced price for tueir fertilizers, as the advance in sugar this year has given them an improved market. ‘‘In the notes of the Editor of the 7elegraps, before refcrred to, it was stated that the Com- pauy mighteither goon to refine the sugar in the Fores: City Refinery, leased for that pur- pose; or sellitto that orsome other sugar refiner. \Vere a Sugar Beet Factory estab- lished in }:t. John, I'redericton, Moncton, etc., the managers could stop short with making the raw siigar, and dispose of it to a sugar re finery, or they 1 cient plant, complete the Halifax 5 it co ul 1 C reg ul ir br from our ‘act ‘* While the plant in the Portland factory has cost $199,C0) and while they rent and use buildings that have cost half that sum, a por- tion of the plant required and used in coim- mou with the ordinary sugar refineries is every now an asain found im the market and could be bought very lows The capital provided, however, should not only cover the plunt, but rovide te means of laying in a stock of 3. It would apparently be difficult to do with a smaller capital than $109,000, unless by the use of credit instead of capital. If the commercia! situation were favorable to the raising of that sum; if our business men could apply it, ov if our farmers would withdraw so much moncy from the Savings Banks in which they have it deposited, and use it for this pur- pose, and also grow from 10,000 to 12,-| 000 tons of beets froin | proper secd, the conditions on which a sugar beet factory, which would presumasly | have in it the el f they provide suffi- lf the ugar Refinery comes into existence, ily add beet s 1e83 or purchase the raw beet sugar weit eal migiit, YMrocecace process. igar making to its nexé season, 7 vile Ciconieats OL SUCCSSss, would be } ; ; mn . ‘ ° ' provided. SMITH, Deputy Min. M. & F. - - ee +e oe ” a Kiepromanra.—This disease has appeared in this city and has spread considerably dur- ing the past week. ‘Two cases are reported. One young man afilicted with it, entered a well-known jewelry store a few days ago and —whether under the influence of the disease or not—pocketed a quantity of jewelry with- out being detected by the clerk. The goods were missed by the proprietor of the store, who gave a description of them to a young man—a disinterested person—who informed him that he had seen goods of the description given with the ‘‘Kleptomaniac.” As _ the Kleptomoniac has very respectable connections the jeweller did not wish to {proceed agamst him. He theretore informed the ‘‘disinterest- ed person” that if they were returnedhe would ‘keep mum.” Accordingly they were. Another young man is known to have com. mitted several petty larvenies. He is also afflicted with the disease; but, singular to say, he has not returned the goods taken, oer abet Mrs. Currax—the woman who uttered the bogus note in HE. & B.
