MACDONALD THE BAILY EXAMINER CHARLOT'TETOWN, JANUARY 5 1900 CEE BE ORI EG, Fae PETE Tae | | | | OPEN LETIER —— he Hon. Donald Farquiarsen, the Unsousd Leader. Sin,—Some time has elapsed since I addressed you my lagt letter. I fally pected the sound advice which | teadered ex to you would not be wholly lost upon you. Instead you have persisted in your med, reckless and wild career, and gone from bad to worse. The voice ef the people east and west bas proclaimed against yeu that the policy of “‘drift” must step. Bel- fast and Murray Harbor have epoken in no mistakable terms that they baye no con fidence in you. An honorable man under these circumstances would resign at ence. You have fa‘led in publishing a correc account of the financial situation, you failed in publiehing the ruinous and reck leas agreement about the Hillsborough Bridge, you failed to publish the report of the asylum investigation, and true to your instincts, a moribund goverament dis- misses the Superintendent, Dr, Blanchard. We should have had the report of the Commiseioners before anything like this should bave taken place. You have male a political institution of the asylum, and it is net to be expested that the country wil! much looger permit you to trade upon an institution that may yet be called upon to receive yourself into its unfortunate wards. The situation of the country is truly alarming. ‘“‘ No coafidence” has bea voted by the country against you. You siill cling to the {fleshspote and purene your made course. Just take a retro spective glance at your Government’s re cord since i891. Inthat year there was a partial election. The Censervative can didate contended fora hait. The accouats should have been published. You made merchandise of the schools to carry that election and the revenue of the province bas suffered from that same mad career. Well you gained poweras aparty. You proclaimed to the country that you hoped the day of taxation was far distant. With a false cry you carried the election, You then immediately levied taxes on the dead acd the living. The next election with a false cry ot an arbitration you raised ihe hopes of the electorate to an expectation of a large subsidy from the Dominion Gev- ernment that atleast a million dollars would be placed to the crecit of this Province and the farmers would never again be called npon tu pay any more taxes. The arbitration fad was knocked cold by Laurier’s announcement in parliament. Peters took his departure to British Col~ umbia.Warburton succeeded him. When the latter found a comfortable berth he also took his departure. You lave suc- ceeded to the leadership of the “rump,” and I do not know where you will shelve yourself ualess it be the position of night watchman on the dredge--to watch and guard tbe steam tug that is receiving $25 per day from the master of the admin- stration, Tarte! Yes! the old surveyiag scow needs 8 watchman also. It ia tou valusblea craft to go onthe shoals. | don’t at all mean to ineinua‘e that these would not be honorable positions. They are king tothe one you hold now. After losing the confidence of tue country «no honorable man would not bold on to power one moment, but would place his resignation in tbe hands of the Governor ard call the Leader »0f the Opposition to take command. At least, such is the course which is being advocated by honoratle men eserywhere. You prefer to haegon to the offices. Wei’, be eure of thie that the country will de- mand a full and open account of every transaction by you, every contract, every road job, every report, every appointment! and every supply furnished and by’ whom to the asylum, provincial gaols, etc., etc., and when your euccessors will take the country into their confidence and pro. pound their policy, they will be expected to do their duty; and if they don’t they too will be turned out. This country must rise above pariy and place its finances on a healthy basic. Butif the taxes must be raised the people must be informed how they are spent. I will not advert to the Hillsboro Bridge further than to say that I am disappointed that the public has no «pirate roaiway from the railway.. They car only use the bridge when the railway is not running. This isa humbug if ‘the pubtic must travel op the same passege ay the cars. Then your bargain with the Dominion is the most scandalous and iniquitous that could be made, for it will not cost the Dominion one thousand dollars a year eXtra, whereas 1 am as- sured Mr. Davies has sacrificed this province twelve thousand a year and you were like the potter’s clay ia his bands. The Belfast aud Murray Harbor election was doubtless viewed somewhat like Philip when be ‘eat his lientenants A(talus and Parmenio into Asia. As usual before all ex edit ous of importance he consulted the Delphic Or- acle and received the following response equally applicable t; the prosperous or unsuccessful event of war: “The Bull is ready crowned; his end approaches, and he will sooa be sacrificed.” The pro- phecy said Philip, is quite clear, the Bull is the monarch of Persia. The predic tion found its But Philip himeelf was the victim. You; in like manner, went to Moncton to con cult your oracle. You brought him to the Belfast and Murray Harbor district, and predicted that the Bull was McLean aud Prowse. Bui,ob! how unforiupate when the oracle’s word correctly inter. preted applies to yourself “The Bul! is | ready crowned ; his end approaches, and he will soon dom. Resign.
