Chicago weather has been intensely hot, and a high death rate prevails. The long suffering Americans should emigrate ina body to the Provinces, where they will get plenty sea breezes and fresh air, and on the whole find far more agreeable weather than they have been used to, though we also have our extremes of heat and cold. Deatn sy Porson. — On Monday evening, about tea time, achild of Mr. Richard Welsh, of Spurr’s Cove, a little girl aged three years, while playing in the garden about the house, plucked and eat a blue flower growing there, commonly called Blue Recket. It is aiso known as Monkshood, but the proper name of it is Aconite, and it is i deadly poison. About nine o'clock the parents of the child were awakened by the little one vomiting vivlently. A messenger was immediately despatched tor Dr. F. MacFarlane, whe arrived promptly, but too late to save the life, the little one being dead already. The doctor proneunced it a case ef poison- ing by aconite. The flower grows with- out .cultivation, is frequentiy seen in gardens and lawns, and too great care can not be exercised in protecting it from children.—St. John Sun. *.-_—<eo-+-- HOUSEHOLD HINTS. Gooseberry Catsup.—Take 10 Ibs of gooseberries, 6 lbs of sugar, 3 pints of vinegar; pick off the stem and blossom end of the berries and wash and drain them. Put them into a por- eelain kettle with half'the sugar, cook them until soft, then strain threugh a eullender to remove the skins. Then add the vinegar, put in cinnamon, cloves and alspice to taste, put it back in the kettie, and cook slowly } of an hour. Seal it while hot in fruit jars or bottles, Sopa 1n Cooxing.—Dr. Horne writes in the Country Gentleman :—Above all things, no preparation of soda should enter into any human foed. ‘The prac- tive, although common, is the sourse of much suffering, and any person recom. mending saleratus in any form io the preparation of our food commits a great wrong. for, as I have hereto- fore said, no person can long havea stomach free from disease which is the receptacle of soda mixed with the food. This is a positive conclusion beyond contradiction. There is no need of soda inany form. KEygs, milk and cream are all sufficient for light, delicate, healthy food, and as a luxury. Even such food should only be partaken of guite moderately, as it is too rich for colstant use, for any stomach which desires to romain healthy. I would not be understood to decry good living, for|- Lam fond of good living, and indulge occasionally in that which brings a penalty, often quite serious. I never, however, partake of everything to eat or drink, of which soda forms a promi- nent, part. q a News from the west coast ef Africa states that trade there is greatly interfered with 7 the withdrawal from the gold coast of 1 American dollars.
