—— Te a Pf et ll Ale Magy a ot One Hour a Day One hour a day conscientiously given | the piano, will lee ep the | sutiful fac complishment which you acquired by se many years of study and devotion. You are a busy matron with something to fill in all the flying moments, and you are con tentedly letting your music go, now that the « hildren are taking lessons rhe girls monopolize the piano, and they are learning to play beautifully, and your pride in their progress is very great. Nevertheless, it is not well that girls should excel their mothers in everything. it is not well that girls should have the} drawing-room especially set apart for the upstairs or in the basement. The motters of to-aay are quite too prone to retire mto the shadowy background, leaving the young jueen it in front. ladies to the mother kee ps her true p! we of gen pre-eminence. We think mothers would less frequently slip from this, if they cared a very little more about not becoming rusty. A woman should grow more and tle move charming as she goes on in life, also fuller of resources, and rather than lose ny acquisition once gained, she should add to her stock as she approaches middle age One hour a day, dear madam, will enable you to surprise your husband, as he sits beside the table in the evening, with the same sweet old melodies which you played to him in the long ago. One hour a day will so give to fingers and brain the power and the magic of harmony, that you will be able to play merry little polkas and jigs for the children’s entertaimment, and to criticise, to their delight and profit, the ambitious performances of the older ones. What else will one hour, set apart to a special use, accomplish? It is quite safe to suy that, devoted faithfully to the reading oi good literature, it will broaden your outlook upon the world, and add to your interest iu society and conversation. It is a pity that really well educated women at h read sv few solid books. Want of time is usually pleaded in excuse, whereas it is quiie as probably want of inclination % indifference to reading, which is the true . =? reason forthe mind’s lying fallow. One hour a day, religiously dedicated either to good secclar books, or to devotional books, will, in the course of a year, tell upom your mental hfe in many ways. One hour a day spent, not over the fascinating embroidery or the engrossing knitting work, or even on the pretty ward- robe of the little ones, but instead spent in entertaining and companioning yorr half grown boy, will yield a ripe harvest in days tocome. It is ashame that so many lads are left to seek associations which do them harm, when they are treading the perilous border-land between childhood and man- hood. A boy should never be suffered to grow away from his mother. He should be, as he matures very much in her con- fidence, and if he is not this, it is too often her fault, Take an hour each day and cultivate your boys. If they are to be pure-minded, gentle and manly, let the refining influence of a happy home be always around them, and let their Christian mother plan for their pleasure. i il Horsford’s Acid Phosphate INCOMPARABLE IN SICK HEADACHE.
