On the stage, the Luigi Piran- dello play was a. tremendous dra- matic llft. It packed an unusual punch that at once caught the 1n- terest of theatregoers. As a talk- ing picture, it wins an even greater fascination to this reviewer. By reason of the intimacy of the cam- era and microphone, the play be- comes vastly more real. Its charac- ters stand out more sharply, seem- ingly more human. Then, too, there ls the gorgeousness of the settings, a freedom in natural backgrounds, that add n. pictorial beauty lacking in the theatre. Melvyn Douglas plays opposite Miss Garbo and registers strongly in‘ the role of Count. Bruro, brood- ing husband of the missing woman. Erich Von Strohelin, as Salter, provides ‘a leerfng menace. Owen Moore is Tony, the painter, who brings Zara to Bruro, believing her the fragile young bride, torn from her husband in wars mael- strom. Others who score 1n sup- porting roles are Hedda Hopper, Rafasla Ottiano, Warburton Gam- ble, Albert Conti, William Ric- clardl and Roland Varno. “Silence” Excellent Drama _ An intensiily interesting human story is the background for the ex- Winnipeg this morning. " "Silence" gives Brook an oppor- tunity to portray a great human character, and the suave and pol- ished star takes every advantage of the opportunity. supported by two capable and beautiful actresses, Brook sounds the depths of a man's soul in a series of adventures, es- capades, trials and dlsl“ ‘ ‘ that bring him finally to the superb sacrifice to save his own daughter's reputation. Peggy Shannon displays a new acting flare in “5llence" which bears out the promise of versatil- ity contained in her role in “The Secret Call." She is dramatic, col- orful, emotfonaLand withal,‘ inter- estingly gay and alive. Playing two roles in this one picture, that of the wife and, later, the daughter of Brook, she manages by sheer talent to keep the two characters separate and distinct and interesting. The action of the picture takes place over a period of twenty or more years, and the early sequences give vivid and interesting life to the "good old days" before the war. ‘The latter scenes, taking place in a modem Middle West City, con- centrate all the force of the drama in terse and thrilling climatic in- cldents. "Silence" is drama taken from life, real, thrilling, belfevabiy por- trayed. .Cang Killing Stirs Po I i c e PITTSBURGH, Pa, Aug, 1.-(A. All!» 1-— Warm weather during the past week has made all crops advance rapidly towards ripening. Early wheat is starting to turn color although in some southern sections the ad- vance towards maturity has been too rapid to permit of normal ber- ry filling and some districts there- fore expect e. considerably decreas- ed yield and s. fairly low grade berry. Present indications are that widely varying yields will be har- vested in Alberta as weeds and spotty growth resulted from cool weather experienced earlier 1n the season. Strips of hall in some loc- alities have completely wiped out crops and gardens, but to date less damage from hail than in an av- erage year has been experienced according to the weekly crop re- port of the Agricultural Depart- ment Csnadlan National Railways. In Manitoba days have, been warm with scattered showers and nights have been cool, making a combination ideal for the product- ion of plump berries. Wheat cut- ting has commenced in southern areas and will be general by the middle of the week. The wheat crop should be one of the largest harvested in years but the barley crop is only fair and oat prospects vary from fair to pour. The depreciation in barley and oat yield indications is attrib- utable to grasshopper damage as in many fields the standing crops have‘ been denuded of all leaves and the hoppers are now beginning to work on the oat panlcles and barley heads. In the Dauphin and Swan river territories ideal rfpn- lng weather has prevailed. A few binders are now operating in fields of B0 day barley.
