Marsh at Mermaid which serv- ed as the supply source of pros- In 1889 this Province could boost of a Moss Factory amongst it industries. This factory was found- ed at Mermaid by a Charlottetown merchant. John MacLeod. who was a native of Mermaid. The moss was gathered on a large peat hog and placed on trolley cars of a small railway which took it to the factory. It was then dried and pressed into bales and sold for horse bedding on the market. Mermaid Moss Factory An Olcltime Island Industry K scd moss in years gone by. Mrs. Mac-Lend moved from the province never to return. John MacLeod had always been a venturesome man, with strong love for his former home in Mer- maid. His home, now owned by Mr. Buell, was for three generat- ions in the MacLeod name. His grandfather. Major Murdoch Mac- Leod. together with William Far- quharson. Donald Currie and Major Alexander Mutch were the only families in Mermaid when the Cub Motiiers' Auxiliary Meets A meeting of the Cub Mothers Auxiliary of Holy Redeemer was held Monday evening in the Com- munity Centre with the President. Mrs. Fred Egan. in the chair, and the Scouimaster, Mr. Frank Costel- lo. in attendanc . the previous meeting were read by the secretary, Mrs. Guy Sullivan. and the treasurerls report by Mrs. Gerald Names. The Scoutmaster reported that the previous Summer's Cub Camp had been the most sucessful one held. due to adequate help and ex- ceptionally fine weather. A recent Edmonton paper des- cribes his early musical education in England where at the age of 15 he was appointed organist of a church in Harwood. Eng., and one year later when only 16 years old. he bacame one of the youngest graduates of Trinity College in London. While still in his teens. he was appointed cholrmaster of St. James Anglican Church in Bolton where he remained for three years, until the spring of 1940. when he joined the RAF. Although Mr. Johnson served for six years with the RAF, he did not neglect his interest in music. Dur- ing his military service of two years in Charlottetown. he fre- quently appeared as guest organ- ist at Trinity United Church. He returned to England, but the people of Charlottetown didn't for- get the young air force man's musical skill, and he was invited to return to the Maritime city as organist of Zion Presbyterian Church. With one loot in Canada, so to speak, he was naturally anxious to see something of the rest of the great dominion he was learning to call home The opportunity came Continues Success As Edmonton 3 MR. Mr. Johnson is a member of the faculty of Alberta College where he teaches piano, organ and music theory. He is a member of the Kiwanis club of Edmonton.
