The 1987-88 basketball sea- son was by far the most suc- cessful ever for a Lady Panther Team. The Lady Panthers roared through the regular season with a perfect 14-0 record. For the third year in a row the Lady Panthers were to host the AUAA Champi- onships at ancient Alumni Gym. The previous year the Lady Pan- thers had defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 59-57 for their first ever championship. In the first game Dalhousie upset UNB 50-40 to advance to the finals. The Lady Panthers met an Acadia team which had given them some trou- ble a few weeks earlier. That scenario would not repeat. itself as the Lady Panthers roared out to an early lead despite some foul problems. Actually the fowl problems helped UPEI as the Lady Panthers were able to rest their key players for much of the The axettes tried to get back in its game but Turn overs proved too costly. It was to be a rematch of the past two years to see who would walk away with the AUAA Championship. The Lady Panthers came into game. the game knowing a loss would wipe out their great regular sea- son, while Dalhousie had nothing to lose. A capacity crowd filled every inch of Alumni Gym ex- pecting a great game between two great teams. They would not be disappointed. | Dalhousie jumped out to the early lead, but the Lady Panthers _ led by senior Tracy MacEachern clawed their way back into the game. As the case was all year it was the Lady Panthers de- fence who led them to the front. - Janet Nichols great work under the boards sparked the Lady-Pan- thers to a 35-23 lead at half time. UPEI picked up, in the sec- ond half where they left off in the first. Applying immense defen- sive pressure the Lady Panthers were able to up their lead to 16 points. Dalhousie called timeout. and from there whittled away at the lead. -The Tigerettes were able to get within four points then Nadine Enman hit some clutch free throws to give UPEI some breathing room. The Game was still up for ‘grabs until the smallest player, Ria Bahadursingh stood tallest. She picked off a Dalhousie pass and was fouled. Her two free throws salted away the victory and gave the Lady Panthers a 58-51 victory and their second successive AUAA Championship. Janet Nichols was named MVP of the tournament. Bahadursingh and Smith were voted All-Stars. Dave MacNeill was named Coach of the Year for the 4th straight year. From there the Lady Panthers went to the CIAU Tournament in Lethbridge, Alberta.
