C., Aug 62 —It looked like I119 mil} way to gct a road to the Pacific Coast, to residents of the Ponce River district took up their picksand shovels- and started to build their own high- way across the Rocky Mountains, They call it the Monkman Pass Highway, Backing it are ISO-odd branches of the Monknian Pas Highway Assotfnfion in British Columbia and Alberta. Members hope they can dr.vc the first truck across the summit by early autumn. Then there. will be plenty of work smoothing off the rough mots and maklniz a permanent roa bed be- fore general traffic can travel the route with ease. Francis Murphy of Ponce Coupe, B. C., is prcsident of the Monkman Pass Association of the Peace Riv- er country of British Columbia. About the same time that interest in the project began to grow in Alberta, he started organization work in this province. “We're cutting out a highway that will be the shortest route be- tween Vancouver and Edmonton," he says, "over the easiest ass through the Rockies north of an- ama. Before long there will be moie traffic through the Moiikman Pass than on any other trans-provincial highway." 'I'hat's one of his main or u- mcnts on his "begging trips" to he coast. and with it he has raised a good few thousand dollar from businessmen long t Cariboo "HIEIIWEY"'HI'IU' l‘i"Viil‘i" . The road cohnettiiif: thr- Alberta Peace River block w th Edmonton is now in "pretty good shape," Murphy says, There is good road connection over paved and graveli- ed highway between interior Han- sard B. C., and Vancouver. The Monlrmnn Pass Highway will join the two road systems by a roadway 150 miles long. Alex Monkman, Wembley. Alta. farmer and formerly n fur trader, discovered the pass in 22. Follow oiu surveys l The highway ‘follows almost ex- nctiy the lines of that survey. Last year a civil ciigiieci" retraced it and mapped out the highway truai. “Our governments have spcii; more on surveys of the route than we need to finish the road," Murphy says. ‘_‘The highway is so easy to build its a wonder it hasnt been put through by one government or an- other long ago." But none did. So last year volunteers started work on l the Alberta end. l They liad no money and no equipment. The Alberta govern- ment had some old tents that WGYCITL being used and loaned them to the roadbuiiders. In the first week of June. i937, the first group 0f l4 ineii started their pick and shovel work. By July. 30 or 40 were on the job, Each man donated two weeks‘ worik and some were kcPl- on at $1 a day once funds began lo conic in. Storckeepcrs donated groceixcs. There is a grader and a bulldozq- tractor on the Job this season, but last year it was all hand work. It was easy across the roiling prairie lands of the Pence River block. but hard to. cut a road not less than 12 feet wide through close-spaced small trees and 4 1-2 miles of wind- fall. crlss-crossed six feet deep with snags and tree-trunks up to three feet iii diameter. By the end of the year, 55 miles had been built from Rio Griinde, Alta, to Stony Lake, B. C. By July ' 1 this season the roadbuiiders hnd reached Kinuseo Fails, 35 miles further west. On July 31 a cavalcade oi‘ more than 100 people made their way to the Falls from the Alberta side, A Vancouver man travelled i,- 900 miles via Calgary and Edmon- ton to be there and estimated he was only 600 miles from home via the Monkman pass. from Kinuseo Falls to Hansard. and of the pres- cnt British Columbia road system, is 60 miles which will be finished in the fall. according to Murphy. Just one example is the benefit to British Columbia farmers around Prince George. B. C. "Oats cost 70 a bushel at Prince George now," he says. "Two hundred miles away in Alberta's Peace River block farmers would be glad to sell it for 25 cents.
