A great deal of interest was taken in the appearance of the 4-year-old Keppoch Playgirl, that had been purchased as a yearling by Dr. J. T. Lantz, President of the Exhibition Association. she was given a lim- ited amount of training this sum- mer at Covehead by Harold Stead and surprised everyone by the bursts nf speed she showed. Racing on the outside she was down to the half in 106 V5 but that clip was Just a bit too much for an unsea- soned pacer and she finished sixth. In the 2nd and fastest heat-2.14 U5-she was a close up fourth. We understand a 31.000 offer has been madelfor her and refused. Our congratulations to Dr. Lantz and also to trainer-driver stead. A regrettable accident hap- pened in this dash when Frisco the Great's kneeboot slipped and his foot caught in it and he took it header. Driver Claude O'Brien was thrown to the ground but claimed he was not injured. although his clothing was tom and he showed quite a number of scratches. Hedge- wood Chief and Lucky Chief fin- ished ln that order. This is a. new record for Iola and also for Truro track. The former track pacing record of 2.08 Us was made by Iola on July 21, 1951. driven by owner Clayton 'MacLeod. Her 13 years seems to rest lightly on this very wonderful mare. They had been there within the half hour for their footprints were imprinted on the wet sand left uncovered by the falling tide. The farmer expressed surprise when I told him. "I've never laid eyes on this covey." was his comment. There are lots of Huns in most sections but one has to go looking for them. Just driving around is not good enough. Farmers are al- so a. valuable source of informa-' tion, if they happen -to be in the mood to impart what they know. Not long ago I overheard a city hunter remark: "The I-Iuns are awful scarce this year. I've talked to a. lot of farmers and they told me there were none on their farms this season." A bystander remarked: "Chan. the farmers are wise to you.” Incidentally this hunter has a setter and she is I good one. . One thing that puzzles me is where the hen pheasants are keep- ing their broods. one sometimes sees a maze of tracks in the dust of a dirt road where a flock has crossed but spotting them" in the flesh is another matter. The only observers who see many pheasant covcys are the men, engaged on highway construction. They stay in the one place meet all day and frequently see a hen pheasant leading her family across the road. Hen pheasants are shy and secretive birds and stick pretty close to the rough, especially when they have young chicka to care for. . Many farmers do not care to advertise hunting prospects on their land unless they know the men they are talking to. Some- how or other I don't blame them. Last fall a Qrmer acquaintance of mine told me this joke on him- self. He had a. nice covey of Huns on the front section of his farm that bordered on a river. He saw them most every day and he did not bother them, the birds them- selves accepted him like they would ordinary livestock around the farm. On a sunny October afternoon two men, with a dog in the. back seat. drove into the yard. Theyi asked permission to hunt which was granted and then inquired asi to where a covey could be located. The farmer thought of his bird friends down by the river and somehow or other balked at act- tlng the hunters on their trail. in- stead he resorted to a little 'white mid and the llth with Neil Budlong (Moreside) in 2.16 225.
