WWWWW0 MONDAY Dec. 24, 1000. CHRISTMASTIDE. Nineteen hundred years ago an Infan was born into this world wherein so many millions had been born before. It was in the days of Rome, her imperial Caesars and her world-wide empire. He was born D0 but a lowly life, humanly speaking, of a subjected race, in a small village far from the seats of the mighty. Of His child- hood and youth we know almost nothing. \\'e know not thht He ever spent a day ill? school. No autlientic portrait or descrip- tion of His persbn has come down to us. ‘Something sealizd the lips of the evangel- ist" and of four biographies not one tells ,whether His person was of more or less ii than medium height, whether His com- plexion was fair or dark. How much there is that we should like to know, but which for inscrixtahle reasons has been concealed. He lived for less than half the allotted ` span of human life, three years of which time He spent in wonderful and unique activity, going from place to place, teach- _ing what seemed straiige new doctrines, land manifesting an earnest sympathy for all huiiian want, sorrow and suttl-ring. | 0 Ile healed ull_rnannei‘ of sickness and . disease with a word or touch. Multi- I tudes gathered about lliin to listen to His teachings. At length there was aroused against Him niurdc-tous wrath of the Jewish hierarchy, and the civil power ot the Roman Governor was set in motion to put Him to death. After the cruel manner of those times He was crucified, and cut off in the midst of His days, leaving behind so far as we know not a single word written by His hand. Today. nineteen hundred years after His lowly birth, the kings and rulers of the civilized world proclaim themselvesi His subiects and profess to hold their ciowns and scept-res by Hisgrace, Our gracious Queen Empress, ruling ti vaster ea fthly empire than has been, is a fli-.vont_ born in such lowly circumstances 1900 years age. He has become King of kings and Lordof lords. In every land from east to 'F west, from farthest north to farthest south, temples have risen in which- n1ilii0IlS gather to His worship. The temples of Baal, of Jupiter and Diana have dis- appeared from the earth, giving place to cathedrals and "churches in which His praises are sung. Around the world the wisest, greatest, best _join together to celebrate from year to year, and from century to century, the day on which He was born in Bethlehem of Judea. To the rationalist, the agnostic, the philosopher, to the unbeliever iti the divinity of Jesus, the transformation 0 that has come over the worldasthe result of His example and teachings and the stupendous exalta- tion of His name above every name are as una.:countable as they are marvellous. To the Christian they are explainable only on the ground that He is divine; that His birth was miraculous; that He had power in Him self to command the winds and life-long_\i_‘0rs.hipper of Him who was , ’ I An Independent Joumal, untrammelled and fearless; aiming to be _ __ _,,_ Just, impartial, Rollablo.Z Neweyn seeking at all times to further the best . -- Mr. James Paton Esq- toa world sunk in darkness and super- stition. He brought life and immortality to light. In all the world to which He came 1900 years ago there _was not an asylum for the insane, or the orphan, an hospital for the sick or wounded, a re formatory for the depraved, Oi' 3. home for the poor. The light and liberty which we enjoy, the institutions which bring health and comfort as they are now in the world, would have been impossible but for His great example, and His great lessons of the Fatherhood of God,the brotherhood of man, the forgiveness of sins and the immortal life. All too slowly is the light spreading, the leaven working, and yet; as we look backward from this last Christmastide of the nineteenth century to the days of the Advent we shall see that the contrast between then and now is a stupendous one. In our own century much has been aCC0l11Dlished. Slavery and the slave-trade with their nameless horrors have been swept from the earth. Persecution for faiths sake has disappeared or abated its rigor. The Herce strife of oreeds has died awtly. New agencies for opposition to all forms of evil have arisen. The dark con- tinents and the islands of the sen have been penetrated by the missionary, the Pioneer, by commerce, civilization and science. So the world looks to the coming century with brighter hopes than ever before. All this should move us with devout hearts to keep this last solemn Christma s tide of the century in the spirit of Him whose advent it honors; in brotherhood and tender charity, in lovinsr miiiistration to the little ones, and to the poor who are always with us-remembering His great lesson, "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren ye have done it unto Me." They are noisy but they are nice. Who would exchange the merry noise of children at play, for the childless home where the clock tick can be heard hour after hour in the dull silence? But there are a inany who would like to peo- ple the silent house with the children that fate has refused them. Fate is often in this case only another word for ignori ance.
