By CHRIS ANNETT With all the controversy of hockey raging and the base- ball season just getting underway the forgotten sport now —_ is basketball. College basketball teams seem to wither and fade away come the spring but it is not just a coincidence. Spring is just not a time for playing basketball in the*eyes of the thousands of sporting fans across the country f it would interfere with the hockey’ finals and the inevital beginning of the baseball. season. . ; Neverthel@ss despite the lack of attention that the sport gets.it continues to expand in Canada and the Maritimes have been one of the hot beds of this expansion. In collegiate i basketball, everyone in Canada associates the name of Acadia University of Wolfville N.S. with the top collegiate aggregations in the country. But too the average person that is where their interest in basketball ceases. : Now however the Maritime province of Nova Scotia is threatening fo, bring“ another national title eastwards. The Halifax Schooners, Maritime and Eastern Canadian senior - men’s basketball championships are currently playing in the six team double knock out Canadian tourney in Winnipeg and they have already outclassed the defending champs in the championships British Columbia. The Saints continued their flood of shots and goals and they ran their lead to 42 at the 17.54 mark, this time, adding insult to injury, while they were a man shotthanded. The Saints iced the puck and the PWC defensemen were just not fast enough getting ‘back to beat Billy Weatherhie. Weatherbie raced in picked up the loose puck and very calmly deposited the puck through El- lis’ pads. The Saints continued to press fn the opening minutes of the third period but gradually the puck began to favour the Welsh- men again.
