The buggy contained the ow'ner and his wife and child. The horse was utterly beyond the control of the driver and near the Milk Facto- ry he csime into collision with _e _fence with the result that -the shafts parted i company with the buggy, and the hor- se with the shafts on-ly claitterlng at his heels and frightening him more, proceeded full speed on his way home,‘ some ten miles out of town. The oc- cupants of the -buggy, who received a bad scaring but fortunately nothing worse~miet, a good Samaritan in the penson of mr J. 0. l-lyndman, who or hearing the facts oilfered -to telic them to their home in his automobile. He had not been using his car that day conforming with the request of the Government in regard to the saving of gasoline but in view of the clrcum~ stances he took his `car down town and got a supply of gasoline and very kind- ly covneyed the victims of the acci- dent to their' home, an action which needless to soy was deeply appreciat- ed. Necessarily the names are net made public until the next-of-kin are notified. The following names have so far been made public :-~ SERGT. DEANE, VV.l-IITE Sergeant. Deane White was the eldest son of Rev. T. DeWqlfe White, rector of St. Mary's Church, Summerside. `The many friends of the Reverend deeply sympathize with them in the sad loss which they are called upon to bear. His death in action in France occurred on the 2nd inst. and the official report was only rc- ceived on Wednesday. He enlisted the first year of the war for gari'-- ison duty in -Halifax. and later join- ed the'lo5th for service overseas. in France he was transferred to the 26th Battalion. He was a gene- ral favorite with all his comrades. Sergt. White was in his early twenties and had bcfore him n :i career of fine promise. In his death a gallant soldier and worthy son has been taken away. PTE. FRANK J. CAMERON Pte. Frank J. Cameron was the eldest son of Mr. _lohn A. Cameron, ,Great George Street. He enlisted in the 105th Battalion. I-le was cm- ployed On the P. E. I. Railway and had attempted to enlist three times before 'being accepted, having ulti- mately to undergo a slight oper- ation for tha? purpose. He went overseas as Corporal and iii 'Iiiiglsml was promoted Sergeant and was made physical drill and exercise instructor of the Battalion. While in England he volunteered seven times for active service in France, and at last gave up his stripes iii order to get across. His platoon wciit into the great..`offensive on August 20th and out of 50 only scvcii returned including himself and for his gallaritry and resource- fultiess on that occasion he was rc- coinmeiidcd for the' military medal. In a letter to his father dated Aug. 24th he briefly described his ex- perience Four days' later, viz.: Aug 28th he was killed in action. He is survived by_his parents, Mr. :ind Mrs. _l. A. Cameron one broth- er Ernest in the Bank of Novzi Scotia, city, and several sisters to all of whom deep sympathy is extend-' ed. - _*__ PTE. NORMAN CASWELL The news by wire yesterday of the death in action of Private Nor- man Caswell of this city was very sad indeed and to his widowed mother residing on Sydney Street who but a few years ago was sud- denly bereft of her -husband and who now loses her eldest son, who was her main upport, the deepest sympathy is exfencled. Pte Caswell, went over as Quarterniaster Serg- ant with the 105th Battalion. llc re- verted to Private last March to go to France, He was offered his stripes later but preferred to remain in the ranks, He. was_a young man of quiet demeanor and excellent character, Prior to enlisting he was employed with the firm of Paton and Co., and previous to that worked for a time on the news staff of the Guardian. To his moth- er and younger brothers and several l sisters, one of whom is Mrs. (Dr.) McPhee of Summerside, much sympathy goes out in their sad loss. ' ...i-.. V PRIVATE CLAUDE WELSH Ms. and Mrs. Michael Welsh, 154 Cumberland St.. City, received word yesterday that their son, Pte. Claude R. Welsh, was officially rc- ,ported killed in action Sept. 2. Pte. Welsh enlisted in the re5th Batt- alion and went to England in 1916. Later he was transferred to the 104th and was .drafted in France to the 26th. His father is a well known caigaénter of this city and both lic an Mrs. Welsh, and others be- reaved will have the sincere symp- athy of many f ricnds in the loss of their brave boy. _ PTE. BRADFORD "ELDRIDGE Mrs E, Eldridge, 4! 'Pasmore St. received a telegram yesterday stating that Pte Bradford Eld- ridge who left here with the 105th has ,beenkilled in action, He was a native of Yarmouth, N. S. where his widowed mother resides. He was aresident of Charlottetown. for four years before enlisting, be- ing employedss _a plumber with i Bruce Stewart and Co., After going to Valcartier he became ill and was honourably discharged, but op his receyery he reenlisted. He was five months in France before he fell in battle ‘on September and.
