Partner may, of course. have the wrong hand. and go down; but the possibility this may occur is not enough to outweigh the prob- ability eleven tricks will be made. A second factor is that the Op- ponents may have a good heart fit they have not yet had time to discover. They are not very likely to start looking for it in the eleven trick level. 4. Pass. This is a typical situa- tion vihere many players feel com- pelled to take action either to im- prove the two diamond contract for part score purposes or to sat- isfy game ambitions. There is a relatively poor chance that any steps taken other than a pass will improve matters. fit with partner's diamonds. Game being so unilkiely, a two heart or two notrump bid is more apt to make matters worse than better. It is more important to show. IEDTIME STORIES A thing In sight may hidden be From eyes that know not what they see -Mrs. Peter Rabbit. A lot of people. perhaps most people. think that Mrs. Peter Rabbit's babies are born in a snug underground nursery just as Polly Churk's babies are. and the babies of Reddy Fox. and the lit- tle Skunk babies. it isn't so. Per- haps Mrs. Peter wants other folks to think it is so. That would make her babies all the safer where they are. The truth is. Mrs. Peter Rabbit's secret nursery is an open secret. Those precious little babies haven't even a roof over their heads. .1 -4-. T? - r. h . -I Hfini I SR -W-it --4: "Was I foolish?” asked Mrs. Peter cnlmly.. . . . . Rabbit, "I hope.” said Peter "that this year you will have sense enough to make the nursery for the babies right here in the dear Old Briar-patch and not be foolish enough to make it out on the Green Meadows the way you did last year." "Was I foolish?" asked Mrs. Peter calmly. "The babies all liv- ed to grow up." Meals Yet never rich or filling '- . Ellie! Daily . "Millions De The Open Secret "It is a wonder they did," pro- tested Peter. ''If those Marsh Hawks had been flying about over in the Green Meadows last year the way they are doing now. they would have found those babies and that would have been the end of them." Mrs. Peter said nothing. She didn't tell Peter that they already had five babies out there on the Green Meadows hidden in the grass. That was her secret and she would keep it just as long as she could and it was necessary. She could keep it much better than Peter could. She was spending much time every day just at the edge of the Old Briar-patch where she could look out over the Green Meadows. She was sitting where she could keep watch of that hidden nursery. but she was far too wise to ever go near it in daylight. When she did visit it. as she did every night. it was secretly and watchfully af- ter the Black Shadows had cover- ed the Green Meadows. Further- more. she never approached it twice from the same direction. Now as little Mrs. Peter sat watching she saw Harrier the Marsh Hawk flying low just a lit- tle above the grass and she knew he was looking down into the grass with as keen a pair of eyes as could be found anywhere around At first he was nowhere near that open secret, but now he was headed straight for it. I suspect little Mrs. Peter's heart was right up in her throat as she watched. But there was nothing she could do about it. so she kept still right where she was. The big Hawk was drawing nearer and nearer to that nursery down in the grass. Would the babies keep still? that was the big question for the anx- ions little mother. How she did wish she could somehow warn them again to keep still. Harrier was almost to that hid- den nursery. It was hidden from all sides by the tall grass. But . of course it wasn't hidden from above and the big Hawk would pass above it if he kept on. He . keep on. For Just a wee minute the little mother watching from the edge of the Old Brlar-Patch he her breath. The Harrier had pass- ed on. He hadn't seen those bab- ies. They hadn't moved. All he had seen was a little patch of fur on the ground. It was a blanket of fur from Mrs. Peter's own coat and it had covered the five little babies who had kept so still. It hadn't interested Harrier in the Least. DAILY CROSSWORD I. Piece of land 23 Russ- tsnow ve- liiclu I. Girl's name I. Quista 1. Macswa 8. Monetary island unit (Ln. 1!. Sultan's de. vi.) "RI 0.
