Their loss is particularly sad, as chey were expected home by their friends | some months ago. Poor ‘‘Beauty” Croft, | as he was familiarly Known in society, was | near his turn for horse artillery when he | sailed for Ismalia, He served through the | campaign in a field battery, which was sent home soon after the grand review at Cairo. Croft expected to return with it, but at the last moment he was transferred to a horse artillery battery, in which a vacancy had occurred through the promotion of one of its subalterns. This battery was one of those left behind. Le Quesne, on the other hand, never set foot in Egypt till long after all the fighting—such as it was— came toanend. He had not very iong joined a battery at Woolwich, and was ordered out, very much against his will, to take the place of a subaltern invalided home from Cairo. His name, however, was left on the roll of the Woolich battery, and he was given to understand that he would return to it when the battery he was attached to left Egypt.
