CHINA WAR DATES_ So long ago as May 21 a joint note of the Ambassadors at Pekin called the attention ` of the Chinese Government to the Boxer troubles. A week later a. small detach- ment fro:n the fleets was sent as guards for the Legations, reaching Pekin June 3. Then the telegraph wires were cut and on June 9 the anti-foreign riots began. The following day Admiral Seymour started for Pekin with 2,000 men. and on the 15th reached a point 27 miles from the capital. On the 18th the Taku forts were captured by the fleets. On the 231-d Seymour reach- ed Tien Tsin on his return. On July 14th the native city of Tien Tsin was stormed by the Allies. On July 30th the despatch from Sir Claude Macdonald, dated at Pekin July 21, announced that the British Legation was still intact and the foreign Ministers, except the German, still living On August 1 the advance of the allied forces from Tien Tsin toward Pekin be- gan. The trade of the Dominion in imports and exports taken together amounted to something over a million dollars a. day for the 365 days of last year. The French-speaking population of Can- ada was 70 per cent, of the whole at the beginning of the present cen- tury. It was but 31 per cent. in 1871 and 29 per cent. in 1891. The New York World remarks that “imperialism has made Italy the head- quarters of anarchy and assassination.” But history hardly bears out this theory. The Italian Kingdom dates back 30 years, and in that time o.ie of its rulers hasfallen by assassination. Within sixteen years of each other two Presidents of the United States were assassinated-Lincoln in 1865 and Garfield in 1781. That was before the days of imperialism in the Republic. The Pepublic of France has been quite as un- fortunate in regard to the murder of its rulers as the Kingdoms and Empires have been within the past thirty years. The Italians are the most heavily taxed nation in Europe, and the burden is most unequally distributed. One half the total revenues of the Kingdom gotopay the interest onthe national debt. Many lux- uries escape taxation, as for instance the saddle horse and four-in-hand of the rich, while the donkey and mule of the peasant, which draws the pl0W Or Carries his produce to market. is heavily taxed. It will go hard withiany such, outside of Ireland in the coming elections if the charges can be established. ` Montreal has lately been flooded with logus bank notes, and there is danger that mme of them may find their way to P. E. Island. The bad nate is of the one dollar denomination and can be easily recogni- zed by the words“Statc Bank New Bruns- wick"'in plain letters across the top. There is no such bank now in existence as the State bank of New Brunswick.New Jersey, which the notes purport to repre- sent. A New York paper remarks upon the decline of the bicycle, which is said to he quite remarkable, not half so many being in use at the popular summer resorts as last year. Among the reasons assigned for the change are the incoming of the aute- mobile and the greater popularity of golf. The main reasons however appear to be that the novelty has worn off, the wheel has become cheap and common and hence no longer fashionable. Hereafter the bike is to be mainly a thing of utility and service, and in that respect will]_probahly always be in vogue. s_- . ,_ e __ . ,WW . _ __. ' <~;>"-iii?
