MCLUBE 1856-1928 Our last article dealt with the life and work of Mr. James Ken- nedy. With the death of Mr. Ken- nedy a. vacancy was left both in the Church and in the Sabbath School where he had acted as teacher .and super’ tendent for years. His mantle seems to have fallen on the shoulders of Mr. Cortney D. McLure, who had for many years been closely associated with Mr. Kennedy and in the work oi the congregation there never ’ was due largely to his sane advice he finally cast his lot with the continuing Presbyterian Church during the troublous times preced- ing the disruption oi i925 and it and good management that the congregation of Murra Harbor North remained steadfast although even the members of ' in opinions differed on this very crit- ical subject. He was also the means oi consolidating all parties so that nobody left the church and today all parties are united in the great- est way and carry on the work to- gether. Eternity alone will tell the complete story so we must conclude this sketch by a letter received from oi them and so there is an unfor- tunate gap in the story as I have it. It is the article from i875 to 1885. The one preceding it appear- ed in the Charlottetown Guardian of February 20th, 1931, but I have no way oi tracing the date of the missing article. Would it be possi- ble that you have any extra copies of the Guardian with this article in it and which you could spare me so that I could complete my scrap book entries. He was also a trustee and up to the time of his death treasurer for the congregation in both oi which of- fices he succeeded the late Mr. James Kennedy. Living in close proximity to the Church and Manse the ministers found in him excellent counsel and help and all classes oi the community found in him a helper and guide. Although naturally of a retiring and mod- est disposition Cartney D. McLure could fill any emergency and though with only an ordinary farrn- er's education he showed to all that it is not so much the amount of talent a man has but the use to which he puts this, that makes the increase and in the Young People's the part you have missed, viz., from i875 to i885, but I shall have your letter printed in the next xveek and this answer of mine to it hoping that some more fortunate reader may have the good fortune to see- thcm and supply you with the same article for it will be particularly interesting to you for it covers the period of the pastorate of the late lamented Ernest Sutherland Bayne, M. A., a student of Nova. Scotla parentage, who “'21s ordained and inducted here in 1876, (a son of Rev. Dr. Baync of Pictou, N. S.) His pastorate extended over eight (B) years and was particularly suc- ‘cessful and he accepted a call in i884 to the same unspcilable and unpronounceable name that heads your letter but whether it was Up- per, Middle or lower I cannot say. for there may not have been so many conveniencm then as now. He succeeded Rev. R. Sedgwick, D. D.. and it would appear his pastorate extended there for several years. He was followed her by Rev- Mr. Roulston as has been already stat- Murray Harbor North, P. E. Dear Mr. Andersoru-Your inter- esting and encouraging letter reach- ed me here this morning after a trip to Charlottetown ,to get over the water that lies between here and Murray Harbor South which place is distant only a few miles. Your letter reminds me of the large circulation that the sketch of History oi the Presbyterian Church here has had and the wide influ- ence oi the press that gives it visi- bility. From many sources l have received very complimentary no- tices and many oi them have urged that it be put into book form and photographs of individuals added to the record. I am not yet able to say whether such will be advisable as the securing and developing of the pictures cost high and it is dif- ficult to determine the most de- sirable ones, and to put in all that might be suggested by friends and relatives would make a. galleryfull. great shock to hear ymterday oi the passing of my good friend Mr. Mc- Lure. During the years oi my min- istry I have never met a. man for whom I formed a. greater respect or for whose friendship I had a higher regard. As a christian gen- tleman Mr. McLure was a. man of. outstanding merit. He was always forward in every good work and ready to speak a seasonable word for that which was high and holy and oi good report. To me the memory oi Cartney D. McLure will ever live in a place of fair renown especially connected With the work oi the Sunday School and the meetings oi the Session in both of which he took an outstanding position. In the Sunday School the children loved him and in the Session his coun- sel was regarded as well worthy oi attention and respect. He was 1n- deed a. leader among people and God is to be praised for raising him up and calling him to the service of the church on earth. What the Murray Harbor North congregation here an entire stranger to the Is- land in the spring of i930 and all summer had been so engrossed with the various duties of the minister that it was only when the motoring stopped and the deep snow blocked the roads for passage and I was kept in the housel took this story up to fill in some otherwise idle time. I then had no authorities ex- cept the life of the late Rev. James MacGregor, D. D., of Pictou. N. S. But on my visit to Knox College- Toronto, Ont, in January, I found some good material in the archives there and got encouragement from ‘my friends on the stuff there to proceed and the Editor of the Guardian devoted space in one or two issues each week to publica- tion. In that way I regret that I did not give more care to the pre- servation of the copies till after the separation of Murray Harbor North Church from Murray Harbor South Church which took effect af- ter the resignation of Rev. Alexand- er Roulston on June 30th, 189i. While this is a generation ago wE HAVE EVERYTHING YOU, ' ’ . NEED -' i A broad statement to make. but one that's "backed up by facts.
