There are very few in this Province not interested
directly or indirectly in the fox industry. During
the past ten years there has been a gradual develop-
ment of fox breeding and fox ranching until thc
industry has come to rank second only to agriculture
in importance. The outbreak of the war resulted in a
check to over-speculation in options and the flotation
of companies with capitalization 'based on option
price-‘, and this, though felt as a severe blow at thc
tiine. has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Fox
breeders during the past eighteen months have been;
turning their attention to increasing the number of
foxes in their ranclics, reducing their capitalization,
and generally coiiscrving_thc iiiterests of their share-
holders :igaiiist the day ivlicn the industry would reach
:1 pelt lia.<i_~‘. Tllat day is now within sight. and if thc
foxinen generally are careful of the opportunities
pre.-'ciitiiig tlieniselvcs they are certain to reap a rich
reward. The Fox Breeders’ Associatioii appointed :t
Sales lloard recently to investigate the pelt market
tlirotigliout the United States, and a deputation of
experienced foxnien visited New York and other
ce-ntre< for this purpose. They have returned full of
optiniisni and with a great deal of valuable information
for the guidance of fox companies. and their report
will be submitted on Tuesday night at a public meeting
in the lioard of Trade Rooms. In addition to present-
in; the formal report. members of the deputation will
arf lr.-<_< the niet-ting and give their impressions and
v§..\.~ oi' the situatioii as they found it, and their
p~.-:'-onal opinions of the future of the fox industry.

ST. ELEANOR BOY GREAT EDITOR
One of the most important and influential news-
papers in the Ifnitctl States is the Brooklyn Eagle,
and a St Elt-anor's boy, Mr Arthur .\I. Howe, has
ju-t been niadc7 its editor. Mr Howe was born at
Sl Elcaiior`s in 1867, the youngest son of the late
Nr \\'illiani I\I. llowe, ai well-known lawyer and
wifler here of his day. Arthur was born at St
I‘f.lc;iiior's and was educated' at the common school and
Prince of \\'aIcs College. At the age of twenty he
went to Neiv York to seek his fortune, and crossed to
Brooklyn. There he received a start as a reporter
on the Slaiidard-Union newspaper, and gradually
workc<l his way up the ladder of journalism till he
bt-vaiiic one of the “ liif wires " of Brooklyn.
ln |893, I\lr Ilolwe transferred his services as
reporter to the Brooklyn Eagle, where he had better
opportunity for promotion. Ile gradually rose on
llie staff till hc \\'as made news editor in 19l2. Dr
Si Clair Kc-livay was the distinguished editor-in-chief,
and he ivas one of the ablest newspaper men in
Aincrica. He dicd last year, and the selection of
.\lr llowe to fill his position has been made after deep
cfiiisiflerzitioii and :i thorough test of' his ability. In
addition to his ncivspapcr work. .\lr Howe is well
l.nnwn for his cliaritablc and pliilanthropiclabours
in his adopted city, and he is regarded as onciof the
inost progressive men of the community. He is

A PIIENOMENON EXPLAINED
There ivas a rniiiour all over the Province on
Monday that an aeroplane had passed over the Island
on Suntlrly night. The origin of the rtimour could
not lic_~.truc_ed,' but-_ the general report was that two
flashes of light illuminated the sky and lit up dark
rooms in country houses. i\loncton and Sydney papers
reported siiriiilar experiences there, but with no ade-
quate cnliglitenineiit. \Ve now learn from Montreal
that there is an astronomical explanation. Our con-
temporary says: i

of the solar system and the alarms of war? In
mediaeval times astrologists thought there were, but
in this enlightened twentieth century most people had
given up the idea that the stars could have any influ-

Inquiry at the Department ‘of Physical Science of
McGill University elicited the fact that the spectacle

ANOTHER IIYMN WRITER GONE
Our old-time hymn writers are passing one by one.
The other day press despatclies told of the death of
Rev. Edgar Page, author of the famous hymn, “Beulah
Land,” at his home in Cape May. He was 80 years
of age and was known as the “ Fishing jersey Poet."
He was the author of “ Simply Trusting." “ At the
Golden Landiiig," “_]ust Ahead,” and "Inasmuch,"
and his work appears in every liymtial of the present-
day evangelical churches. But for this announcement
of Rev. Mr Page’s death, who would have thought that
the author of such a seemingly old hymn as “ Beulah
Land” was still living? The hymn seems as old as
the Rock of Ages. It has been ruiniing through our
minds and singing in our hearts these thirty, forty
and fifty years. ~ .
“ I’ve reached the Iaiid of corn and ivine,
And all its riches freely mine:
Here shines undimmed one blissful day,
For all my night has passed away."

ENEMY ALIENS
During 'l`hursday’s debate in the House of Com-
mons on the subject of aliens from enemy countries.
the Prcniier, Sir Robert Borden, explained (says a
contefnporary`) what measures the Government had
taken for the public safety and expressed the opinion
that the conditions to date were proof that they Iiad
been effective. With this conviction- 'the average
citizen is bound to agree. There have been rumours,
and even scares of a kind, which have led to a re-
doubling of the vigilance of the authorities, but even
in cases of local excitement the people have felt secure,
broadly speaking. Surely there is good reason for
this confidence. Thousaiids upon thousands of troops
have been moved by train and steamer, fropi recruit-
ing point to training camp, and from there to the-" scat
of war, with practically no mishaps. Muiiitioiis have
likewise been transported without accident. Public
structures of various kinds and private ones engaged
in governmental work have been protected success-
fully, and, let us hope, the guardians will continue
to hold their present good record. Suspicious persons
have been watched, and, where the suspicions were
justified, have been apprehended and interned. Com-
plaints have been attendcd to eveirwhen they seemed
absurd; in fact, no chances have been taken. And
the policy of safety over all should and will be
followed.
When the war broke out there was justified appre-
hension as to the possibilities in parts of the \Vestern
Provinces, where the enemy nationalities make up a
relatively large part of the population. But there that
excellent force, the Northwest Mounted Police, holds
sway, and the months have passed by without any
outrage being perpetrated. Foolish and evilly inclined
individuals have been brought to book and placed
where they can do no harm, and talkative persons have
becnmade to understand that unwise or treasonable
words will not be tolerated. Arms have been yielded
up by these settlers in accordance with the Govern-
ment order, and, where it was not heeded, have been
seized. So to-day these districts are as safe as any
` the Dominion. Commissioner Perry, in his annual
iibport, points out that the farmers in question are
scattered over the vast _areas of ilie provinces, and
“ that it is quite apparent that no concerted action
could take place without preparation and organization,
lacking which any outbreak would be sporadic and
fruitless." It is not to be forgotten, either, that large
bodies of troops are in training in_every centre, who
would be available if any trouble zfrose. ‘
The machinery of thc Canadian Government seems
to be well organized in all matters pertaining to the
public safety. Vigilance has been the watchword and
the work has been carried out with fairness to all.

On next Monday morning "Barker"
will face the nuigititrate on a char8G
of having obtained goods under false
pretences from Howard Rogers. It
was ht this store that Barker secured
carpets. furniture and other furnish-
ings, with which to equip the house
he had rented. The other charges
have been laid by E. O. McDonald.

CASE COMMENCES
NEW YORK, Feb. 15.--A grand Jury
began today to take evidence concern-
ing tim murder nf Barney Ralf, the
noultry dealer, who was killed by a
band of gun men in November, 1914,
under circumstances which have been
likened in some respects to the mur-
der of Mei-mann Rosenthal for the ln-
stlgatlou of which Charléb Becker was
executed. There has been no lilut
however. that the police were in any
way involved in the Balt ease. It ls
charged that Buff was slain as the re-
-,ilt of rivalry in businessythat a fund
of $4.200 was collected from about 200
poultry merchants under tho pre-
rense that it was to be used in a legal
night. against Balt and that this fund
was used by a “murder steering com-
mittee" of twelve - men to employ
agents who in turn employed the gun
men who shot Buff-to death. District
Attorney Swann believes _ he has
enough evidence to send‘to'the elec-
tric clialr four men, in addition to
some of the gun men who actually did
the murder. .'

fighting is terribly wearing on men.

did not get my telegram until too
late. He ls doing well, so the boys

was Regimental Policeman and be

over there. They say he is a. great

I have not heard from Mary for a
long time. I shall write her again
to-day. I shall be kept busy this trip
out writting letters. In the winter lt
is impossible to write in the trench-
es and as for the post cards lt is only
an odd time we are Issued with them
now. When there were only a few
of us here we had lots of them but
since the -large reinforcements have
come there is -a great scarcity in
those directions.
Since writing the above a young
fellow named Walker from George-
town, who used to go to school to me
called at our hut. He is changed but
I knew hlni at once. He is iii the
14th Battalion with Amby Mahar.

brave and doing fine work ln the 14th.
It is so pleasing to know that the
P. E. Islanders arc not bolilnd hand
when trouble is on.
I hear that the P. E. I. Heavy Bat-
tery has landed in England. They
have an easy job. I don't know whe-
ther I ever told you of the different
ways the Germans “Straofe" us
There arez- Whlzz~ba.ngs. Krupps,
Universal Shrapnol. Ordinary Slirap-
nel, Aerial Torpedoes. French Mor-
tars, Jack Johnsons, Coal-boxes.
Bombs and Rifle Grenades. This is
all outside of their rifle-fire and ma-
chine guns. The _whlzz-bangs are
most miserable shells as you have
scarcely a second from when you
hear the shell until lt explodes. It
demorallzes more than creates act-
ual injury.
The Krupps are generally a six-
lncli bowitzor shell and a. high ex-
plosive. It makes a peculiar sound
which is much like (kur-rup). It it
lands closely there is not much
chance.
Universal Shrapnel explodes and
sends its pieces in all directions, dif-
ferent to the ordinary shrapuul which
bursts in the air and only shoots
forward and is only used for troops
in the open.
The aerial Torpedo is built on the
same plan as the torpedo of the sub-
marines. They are able to shoot
them up to one thousand yards and
they produce an awful racket, but
although a great number have been
fired at us, we have had only two
wounded as they are incapable of
guidance and it is only by chance
that they will land in the trench..
The Trench Mortars have caused
us a lot of casualties as you do not
hear them coming and they go off
with a. terrlfle explosion. Tho rifle-
greuados will do harm to anyone in
the immediate vicinity. but the prin-
cipal wounds are in the legs, as they
do not shoot high when they explode.
There are many different kinds of
bombs but unless wo are nt close
quarters tliero is not much use for
'tliem. l forgot to mention their gas-
ahells, which explode over us and
lend of! a suffocating gas. It. ls es-
.paolally hard on the eyes. also the
-membranes of the throat.
Well. dear mother. I must close
now. 1 shall be able to write all dur-
ing this week out. The day after to-
morrow ls my birthday and I hope
you lots of stories in dear old P _

to be -fined for falling to put a war tax
stamp on a check. Newsome sont a
check to a. man in payment for some
work. but according to_thc man it was
not for tlie correct amount. The check
came into the hands of the crown auth-
orities and the result was that New-
some was summoned. He was fined
$10 and costs, or thirty days, although
lie claimed lt was an oversight that
he had not ‘put it on. The Sterling bank
who accepted the cheek without a war
tax stamp. are to be summoned to the
court to give their explanation for so
