Rules and laws are a series of "don'te" which become intolerable by the monotonous pressure of their binding. it is natural that such ll conception and such a. pressure should breed an attitude which tries to circum- vent the law, "to get away with" something whenever the law is not watching. And so, school boys will play hoolzey when they are sure they will not be caught, mer- chants will take unlawful profits when unobserved, and politicians will abuse their office as long as they are undetected. Surely such an attitude springs from an ignorance or lack of thought regarding the nature of law. For when the beauty and true purpose or law are understood. the attitude changes from grudging and measured toleration to eager and whole-hearted acceptance acceptance of laws true and just. This must have been King David's attitude when he wrote, ”I medl- tated also on thy commandments which I loved. And I lifted up my hands to Thy commandments which I loved." All law which is just is an eman- ation from the Divine Law. The natural law is that extension of the Divine Law which God placed in His creation. It is this same law by which all men seek happl- ness and all things gravitate to- ward their proper ends. There is with a box of Stationery from The Island Book Room, Great George THE KIRK CAN DLELIG HT CAROL VESPEBS.-At. I would have taken better care of them". There is a good deal of sound philosophy in these words. They enshrine the truth that we have to live with ourselves. and have to pay with campound interest in later years for the extravagances of an earlier th th ii i I 1"c”0d- - . This is the secret of that habit of mind of those who are always looking for entertain- ment outside themselves. some people seem to have no resources of their own. and so depend on outside excitement. . E I There is one thing to remember, and that is we may get rid of oth- er people. If we do not like them we can leave them, but there is CHRISTMAS SPEBIALS PAGE THREE cne thing that we cannot do- that is get rid of ourselves. some rnlic try to, and engage in a whirl of excitement. But as time goes on life is apt to become lonely. and there is not the response to stim- ulus there was once. or they may have lost friends by death or re- moval. We are reminded of Jacob at the ford Jabbok. His past came l:-ack. He had to meet, after twen- ty years, the brother whom he had wronged. If alldhis be true, what wiser thing to do than to get ready for it? Young people should remem- ber that they have to live with themselves. What kind of a psell will that be? That depends on the way they are iivipg .now. Meantime let them cultivate quality of soul. lay up treasures in the mind. have it well-furnished, take to the heart some of the great books of the world. All this will greatly enrich the life. Then, besides. one must have peace of conscience in order to be lwpny. What worse thing could be thought of than that a man should have an accusing conscience in old age? To avoid this we should seek to have harmony in inc soul. so that no ghosts may look at us and sting us with re- moi-se. We used to be told when we were children not lo ”make faces" for lhey would be on us" when we were old. There was a lot of truth ii? the idea. Life is a process of in-coming. and what we are to be largely depends on what we are i"iinking of. and doing, now.
