Backstage ... with Holly Good Welcome once again to Backstage, your weekly look at the music scene. This week we're going to chat about MIKE WOODS, Mike is the first per- former in the Panther Lounge Series starting Thursday, October 16th. First of all, what is the Panther Lounge Series? Well, there are many performers who are better suited to the smaller more friendly atmo- sphere of the Panther Lounge, than the Showcase on the second floor. In the past, such performers as Fran Doyle, Bowser & Blue and Ron Hynes have played the P/L to enthu- siastic, sell out crowds. So this year, you can expect to see more live entertainment hap- pening in the Lounge. To kick-off this series, the Student Union is proud to pre- sent MIKE WOODS, Thursday, October 16th. Mike makes UPEI the first stop on his tour of Maritime Universities. His fabulous performances at COCA ’86 (Canadian Organi- zation’ of Campus Activities) Milton Acorn The Labour Management Relations Council of P.E.I. is sponsoring the Island’s first work poetry competition. Mike is thrilled to be coming. He tells me that this is his first tour of the East Coast and it is one part of the country he has always wanted to see. In the past, he just hasn’t been able to make the time in his busy touring sche- dule. Mike will be coming to us following a 3 week tour of U.S. colleges and venues. How can I describe Mike’s music to you? You see, with Mike, it’s more than the music it’s the people. Mikes plays his own unique style of contem- porary folk/rock, but he never plays the. same set twice. He usually chucks his song list in favour of requests. By the end of the night, everyone is singing and clapping along. When I saw him at the ‘Poor Folk’s Deli’ in Brantford, Ontario, he had to give three encores before the crowd would stop pounding on the tables with their beer bottles! Mike has written and re- corded many songs, among Work Poetry be typed, and the author’s name must not appear on the poems. The entrant’s name, address and phone number should be included on a sepa- rate page. Entrants must in- clude a self-addressed and stamped envelope if they wish their entries returned.
