Heginning with Dulu:h, which is situated at the head of Lake Superior on the Minnesota side, it is a city of 47,000 inhabitants. Its chief resources are derived fromlake traftic, wholesalecom- mission and real estate. It possesses some fine buildings, prominent among them being the Spaulding Hotel, Lyceum, Chamber of Cummercs and the First National Bank Is lake traffic consists chiefly of p: ssevge:s, coal aud wheat, the fatter boing transhipped by steam elava'o-:s of which there are seven in number, It is wcceszible by seven lines of railway. Con- spicuous at the head of these is the new Union re tus recently at # cost of $175,000. West Duluth, four miles dis- lant, 18 the manufacturing centre on this side of the bay. Ic has four large plants, ! the principal one 1 might mention wouid be the Minnesota Iron Car Company which employs about 400 men, Crossing over the bay we come to the thriving city of West Superior. It is a city of seven years growth. But it has nevertheless a popula- tion of 30,000. Its resources are the same as those of Duluth. It possesses high and level streets, with the larest improved etreet car system It has aiso fine buildings and business blocks, the foremust being the Ritchie, New York and Buston Block, and the West Superior Hutel. It is destined to be the great manufacturing centre of the North- west. It has already a dezen or more large plants, the principal ones being the Kentucky Stee! Plant, the Libslle Wagon Works, West Superior Iron and Steel Com- pany'’s works, and the famvuus American Steel Barge Company's works, buiiders of the celebrated whale-backs, f which your readers are slready aware. These indus- tries alone give employment to 400 or 500 men each, besides a 3,000 barrel per day floar mul, and another of the same capa- city in course of erection. Another great business, of which I will write on some future occasion. Considering it time to pay a visit to my native land, | will make a few remarks on my journey homewards. There are severe] diffsrent lines to come by. Choosing the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic to St. Ignace, thence we cross the Strait, which is seven miles wide, by steam barge, and arrive at Mackinaw City. Leaving there over the Grand Rspids and Indiana Rail- way we pass through a fine agricultural and fruit-growing country, and arrive at De- troit, Mich. Transferred there across the river by barge, we are on the Canadian side. Leaving Windsor by way of the Grand Trunk we pass thruush a rich and several fine cities along this line, principal among them being London, Logersoll and Hamilton. Catching glimpses here and there of the blue waters of Like Ontario, we arrive at Niagara. Weare now within hearing distance of this American wonder, the Niagara Falls. Crossing over on the Suspension Bridge to the American side we might utter with J. S. Buckingham : No fleets can atop thy progress, no armies bid thee stay. But onward, onward, onward thy march stiil holds ita way. Lhe risiog mist that veils thee as thy heralds go before, And the music that proclaims theo is the thundering cataract’s roar. Leaving the Suspension Bridge depot over the New York Central and Hudson River Railway, the great four-track road, we pass through Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Troy to Albany, where we change for Bostoa over the Buston = and Albany road, ar: riving there after a journey of sixty-four hours. After spending several days in this great seaboard city we resume our journey, taking the Boston and Maine Railway to St. John, N. B, thence the Intercolouial Railway to Point du Chene, where we find the commodious steamship Northumberland in readiness to carry us across the Straits. . Summerside is reached, and we are soon on board the train again for Chark.ttetown, remaining there for the uight. The next day being market day, we took the opportunity of visiting the markets and other places of interest. We ‘ake the evening train for Souris, the point of our destination, arriving there in due time. Proceeding from the depot we note that through the village some changes have taken place, notably in house building ; but, judging from appearances, a vast differevce exists between the business of P. E. Island and that of the free land of Uncle Sam. H. J. Greenvale, Jan. 9, 1892. McDonatp.
