Some halt pound fresh run trout.l have been caught below Cass's'i bridge and a heavy movement of. sea trout has been observed mov-I In: past the Blockhouse Point into the Hilleboro River this past few days. A few in the half and threei quarter pound class have been. creeled by persistent anglers butl In the main they are not interested in artificial lures. It is thought that it will be the first week in July be- fore fmohwaier fishing for the l beaveyweights will reach its peak. I have seen Matthew's Pool on I Gurney'a stream full of big trout on June 26th but trout never run . strictly on schedule. They t-oiildi there at this moment ..s pool could be barren one evening and full of trout the next morning. Trout are. moving in the Montague river and at least one good catch was made under lihe bridge below Rat-khani's'. Mill at Wheatly River. This late June run is our heaviest. There are later movements of sea trout in fresh water of lesser volume and then we have the spawning run to- ward the close of the fishing sea- son. This run doesn't really figure Sea Trout Movement To Fresh Water Slowed Down -in the anglers calendar as the fish- hawy I amhmed hm him and med ing season close: on September At this date trout, especially the spawning females. begin to break down and their flesh loses its flav- our. Old Timers insist we have an early run in May which they call the "Lilac Hun" In other words. when the lilacs are in bloom watch out for fresh run trout. Personally I have never noted any unusual movement of trout in May...'incom- ing that is..but the Old Timers could be right. Recently some of the boys ang- ling in tidal waters have tangled with some weighty denizens of the deep they never even glimpsed... "a seaward rush there wu no stop- ng. It gives one a queer sensat- ion to find something on the end of th line that feels like a big steer heading for parts unknown. its just in matter of giving it the liiiii and hoping for the best and then. the line or leader snaps. It could he a sea bass or oversize speckled trout of salt water variety. Years ago Rainbow trout were introduced to New Zealand from British Columbia and in some Vt-ii Nt-w Zealand rivers rainbows weighing twenty-five and thirty pounds have -been landed on rod and reel.
