DAVISON, Cachier. nov29—15 éwtd eee owes + awe ISLAND PRODUDLE, Str,— The present season isa favorable and one for all our Island produce, our farmers and fishermen will all bave what we may call “fa satisfactory fall,’ and ao improvement in Our circumstances al) along the line seems to be now in order, Our butter and cheese, under the ablo influences of Prof. Robertson aad our aw Mr. Dillon, and the output of the Hear) fsctories has now taken the first place in tue leading market of the world. Our large exports of vats under the manage mentof Walter Matheson and Carvel! Bros, our supply of pork through th Messra Rattenbary, and best equipped packing plant in Canada, aud our lobater pa k in the hands of such men as Mr. Tidmarsh, of the Portland Packing Ce mpany, and Messrs J. H. My- rick & Co... wiil the Islaad product take the place of stardard brarda in all the market What we now wantis the co-operation ofthe farmers and producers to assist the shippers in making [sland goods the best on anv market. Our climate, our soil, and our natural circumetances justify us in making this t ail we want to secure itis honesty and intelligence on wito the ltarye~«t ' SOOT mane of the world. other claim, —an | the part of our produc rs and Shippers,— } and for this we depend | influence of on the powerfn] Tue Examiner and other papers. A short time azo I wrote you on the subject of our oyster outpu’, aud Iam now glad to say that the result has been that our fishermen have placed much better goods, and have secured a much higher price than in previous vears. Al! our deal- ers have made a much better profi; on their shipments, and the Charlottetown stock has largely increased in the favor of outside buyer?, and I find that my letter has been read and carefully considered by a large number of Islauders witt favorable effects. 1 now wish to call your attention to the next item in season, viz., smvelts. This is a product of considerable extent to a large number of our country people,—and the season is now pear at haad. Our market for this item depends en- tirely on the United States. Last year they were admitted free of duty, whereas this year under the new law known as the Dingley tariff bill they will be seul ject to a duty of | of a centper Ib. equal to $15 per ton, which isavery serious item in the shipment of fresh smelts. Now, how are we toget overthis ? There is @ way that will make this duty tend to, our a‘vantage. Let the fixhermen pack only the best goods, and feed their mail stuff tothe pigs. Manv farmers tell me thie pavs as well a shipping them. Pack all your best stock in good boxes of a uni- form size. The box mast ‘be 16 inchee long 12 inches wide aad. inches deep, and will contain an average weight of 27 Ibs each. The size of the vox is an important item, as those goods nearly always go into celd storage at the other end; and besides this our I<land smelt# are jcassed as odd lote in Beaton and New York owing te the irregularity of Our packages and they cannot be clase with the straight lote and larger quantities that go from the New Brunswick shippers. The result is that our stock realues from lct to 3sts per pound, or from 25 per cent. to 50 per cent. leas than the stock from other wacers. The packing into each bx of a tew small smeits« largely reduces the qnality of the whole lot, and it will pay our fi<her- men much etter to throw such emal! stuff away than to pack and sell them. The only way to overcome the new daty is to increase the valne of our pack, and *his can easily be done by proper care and the right boxes, This new dutv being a epecific one, and not an ad valorem rate, smelts frum other markets vwalned at 4c per pound wonld oply pay the same amonut of daiy as our s'ock, which wonld be worih not amore than 2c per povnd which would make our percentage of duty jn»t 100 per cent bigher than the percentage rate of our competing neighbors. ", his means we must increase the value of our st ck or drop the business. In order that our fishermen nav he able to make the bert of their smeits thie year I have provided afew thousand of the regulation boxes which will be forn shed, free of cost to the fishermen whose goud- we will handle.
