NOVIHBER 21. 189. - f -1 r - ' ri THE LICENSE ACT. Premier Farquharson in the meet- ing at Pownal last Saturday night made the mistake of setting the License Law conspicuously before his hearers. Mr. Farquharsou endeavored to bolster up the License Law by statements which were made only te be disproved at the time when the law was enacted. One of these state- ments was that there were 150 rum holes in Charlottetown when the Act was This is nearly double the number which the police knew any about. “Never was there so much drunkenness," says Mr. Farquhamon, and yet _every amount of drunkenness under his License Act has surpassed all pre- vious records. He evidently had the I real state of the case in his mind ‘, when he said that the men employed A on the sewerage were the cause of so imuch drunkenness during the past summer. But the sewerage con- struction was going on before as Well p as after the License Act came ' in, and no such extent of rampant drunken- ness was ever witnessed as after that Act came into force in June last. Neither THE GUARDIAN nor the tem perance people of Prince Edward Is- land have changed their opinions with regard to the License Act. License is a device of the enemies and not of the friends of temperancalts demoralizing character is proven by its fruits. The law must be removed from our statute A book if the temperance community .can prevail, and we doubt not they p will prevail. We sincerely trust that ." not another session of the House will .be permitted to pass without seeing l‘l__-' _ E U0., "f“ lthe License Law destroyepl root and (wi: A, W. I It is surprising that news of so im- ‘portant an event as the death of Sir .William Dawson should first reach lust Pul The serious illness of Dwight L Moody has compelled him to cancel his engagement at Kansas City where he had been carrying on evanvelistic work. His condition is so grave as to cause fear that his life work may be practically over. He has accomplished a great service in arousing men and women to a higher spiritual life, and whether permitted to resume preach- ing or not the world will be the bet- ter for his having lived in it. Hr. Moody is in his 63rd year. THE first meeting of the Natural History and Antiquarian Society for the season will be held next Monday even- ing. ;Members admitted by ticket.
