et OP GPa ent Ke) te =o. — A Tyrannical Rector. A STORM OVER THE EXCOMMUNI \N OLD FARMER. RAISES CATION OF The New York H telegram says church ‘ald’s London od state divorce prom os to bea burping question at the coming elections. Both chureh and clergy, by their conduct, are almost ally helping the Radical ery of “Divorce the Church and State.” The news- papers continue to bring charges against members of the clergy for drunkeness and in some cases loose morals on the one hand and bigotry and clerical oppression on the other. On the Srd inst.. a most flagrant case, belong- ing to the latter category, came to the surface in the parish of Lahamstoney, inthe County of Norfolk, twenty miles east of Norwich. Ihe parish has 1,300 inhabitants. The value of the living is £1,052 annually, almost a sovereign per head of the population. The incum- bant is an Oxford man, imbued with the ecclesiastical spirit of the age of the Stuarts. His name is Coker-Adams, and he bas been rector since 1876. Io yngregation an old farmer, well to do, named Payne, uow eighty two years old, of patriarchal appearance and be loved by his neighbors, is suffering somewhat from the infirmities of age. Latterly he did not go to churcb, though for half{a century he was a _ regular communicant, nor would he see the rector to whom, it is said, be had taken a valetudinarian dislike. The rector last week wrote to Patriarch Payne a letter, telling him: “I feel it my pain- ful duty to pronounce you cut off from Church communion,” and concluding, much after the fashion of an assize judge, who has donned the black cap and_ is sentencing a murder, “and I pray God to have have merey on your soul.” The patriarch, being a practical man, conceived the idea that this was cone because some part of his tithe remain- ed unpaid, and he asked with some naivete if this was not the reason of the rector’s conduct. The Rev. Coker- Adams than wrote another letter, re- peating his biack cap prayer, and then on Sunday, to the surprise and indigna- tion of the congregation and in the tone and manner of Cardinal Becket, he ap- plied aspecies of Anathema Maranatha to the revered octogenarian, who really has one footin the church-yard turf, using the sad, soul-echoing words of excommunication in the prayer book, which is quite obsolete in the Charch of England. The farmer thus treated meditates obtaining legal redress,believ- ing the attack to be one made upon his personal character. Meanwhile the people of the whole diocese of Norwich, appeared to be intensly excited, and undoubtedly the whole radical press of the realm will adopt the aggressive in- cident as a pivot for renewed attacks upon a union of Church and State that invites bigotry aad ecclesiastical auto- cracy. Parliament willalso be asked to inquire into the affair. Honesty is the Best Policy. Mr. Black, the eminent and wealthy coal dealer, called one of his oldest drivers into the office the other morning and tendered him quite a large sum _ of money. What is this for ?asked the astonish- ed driver. Merely a token of appreciation for services rendered, replied Mr. Black kindly. But, sir, you’ve always paid me well for my services, and that was apprecia- tion enough. There is really more than that in it, John, continued the gentleman, I really owe you the money. I don’t understand. Let me tell you, and he dropped his voice to a whisper, you have been with me for twenty years, working 300 days every year and averaging three loads a day ; that makes 18,000 loads. You weigh about 160 pounds, John, and we have never failed to weigh you in with every load of our superior coal; that makes two million seven hundred thousand pounds, or 1,350 tons. This, at $3.50 per ton, John, represents $4,725. The package you hold in your hand contains $472.50, or ten per cent., his Cc which we think is yours by right. We are honest men, John, and don’t desire to defraud any man out of what is just- ly his. John bewed in humble submission and is now waiting for the next dividend. -<_- Stanley Huntly. Stanley Hustly, the author of the Spoopendyke Papers, who has just gone over to the majority, did his first work for the press as areporter of the New York Tribune, for which he wrote but one article. He was assigned to report the meeting of the Farmers’ Ciab. Without trying to obtain any information by questoning members of the club, he wrote a sareastie article poking fun at the Chairman, and dwelling upon the hayseed in that worthy’s hair. The next day he was in- formed that his services were no longer wanted; and the fact was explained to him that Horace Greeley had presided at the Farmers’ Club. et - Iv you have apiece of fine machinery to mend that you know cannot be mended in any other shop on P.
