Un-| Macgowan is a son of the late John Mac- }gowan of Dundas. Last surnmer young Macgowan was sunstruck, but there did pot seem to be anything very notice able in bis demeanor excepting that when inthe house he seemed melancholy and moro:e. But this feeling seemed to wear off when he was in company. It is stated that on Friday evening Mac- gowan attended a meeting of the Good femplars Lodge, where he acted in the capacity of sentinel. Oa Saturday morn- ing he complained of a severe pain in the head. Subsequently he began to talk incoherently, and spoke of getting a bicycle and going to Boston and South Africa. Leaving home he went to Joba K. Me- $1.50 4 Hats, all at { 50c | Lean’s grocery at Albion Cross, about a mile $1.50 to) all Drimmed Hats Half) 75 to distant. Mr. McLean noticed that there nc. Gents’ Cuffs at 22c appeared. Hugh McLean arrived at the piace about the same time. Macgowan, who was swinging an axe which be had procured at Mathesons’ house, angrily demanded of the men what they were fullowing him for, and told them to mind tLeir own business and leave him alone. Hugh McLean said they were looking for sheep, whereupon Mac- vowan, dropping the axe, said there were housands of them there oa the road. As -gon as Macgowan dropped the axe it was seized by Hugh McLean, who held it over Macgowan’s head as if he was going to strike him. This hostile act had the effect of frightening Macgowan, and he returned quietly to his own home with McLean. Joho K. McLean and Morrison then called at Mathesons’. They did not knew the Matheson men were away and never suspected that anything was wrong at the house. They found the door open and when they stepped inside a horrible sight met their gaze. Margaret Mackenzie, the housekeeper, lay on the floor with a large gash on her bead and another on her neck. Tbe blood «as flowing freely, and there were several pools of the liquid on the floor. A few faint moanscould be heerd escaping from h:r lips. They promptly gave the alarm, and Drs. Donahoe and Nicholson were summoned, who dressed tbe wounds and did allin their power for the sufferer. The cut on the right side of the neck was found to be about an inch and a half deep, and extended to within about a quarter of an inch of the jugu'ar. The cut on the head was circular in shape, and was just above the right ear. The hack- ing character of the wounds is thought to have been the resultof battle offered the wowan’s assailant by adog which was is the house, and which followed Macgowan when he left the house and did not return until eleven o’clock‘that night. Oa Suoday afternoon when the wounds were being dressed the same dog stationed itself out- side the window and with its paws upon the sill peered in and seemed to take the liveliest interest in what was being done. Miss Mackenzie did not recover sufficiently from ber injuries to give any information regarding the trouble. Ouce or twice she moaned as if in pain, but no other sound escaped her lips. li is thought by some that when Macgowan entered the house and attacked her she set the dog upon him to protect herself. But of course this is ail supposition. Macgowan remained at home on Satar- day night, sleeping we'l except fora s-ight resticssness. Ou Sunday morning he arose and dressed himself, but declined break- fast complaining that his stomach was bad. Not long afterwards he began to ac: very excitedly, and he was arrested _ by cobstables Archibald Currie and Juhu R. Campbell and lodged in Georgetown ‘ail. ‘That night he did not rest any, and ‘became very violent. He was examined by Dr. Stewart and pronounced insane. Last evening the same constables brought Macgowan to Charlottetown. He was very violent, and it was necessary to strap his feet besides handevfting him. He presented a sad picture indeed.
